i agree about WiiU though |
Look at Nintendo's numbers since the NES:
62 mil for NES
49 mil for SNES
32.9 mil for N64
22 mil for Gamecube
100 mil for Wii
18 mil for Wii U...
An obvious downward trend followed by a huge spike that defies pretty much all logic; and then followed by a huge dropoff for the Wii in its later years and it's successor. That's pretty indicative of a fad. Notice how in the same year that the Wii had a 31% drop in sales- the PS3 and 360 were actually up yoy... and were consistently selling better than the Wii over a longer period of time. The fact that it's still selling software made for the casual audience is because of its 100 mil+ stong install base of a mostly casual audience.

The comment he was responding to had nothing to do with Sony. It would be odd if he just brought it up.
A competitor saying bad things about its competition? How surprising...
But I do agree, the wii was a fad but least it was something new... I know it was already invented before but it was never this creatively marketted

Sony went from 160M consoles to 90M with the PS3. i guess that spike that is comparable to GC to Wii proves PS3 is a fad too.LOL.NO. It sold 100M because it was a great product very well marketed period.
You just made up the 18M number for WiiU. And its a pretty bad prediction by the way, your not going to make it.
Wii is still selling quite a lot of SW because is not a fad. Thats a real indicative.

Wii U will be very lucky to cross 20 million units man. Have you seen how far its tracking even behind the GameCube? Factor in Smart phones, Tablets and low barrier entry PC gaming things aren't looking up at all.

@bold: Too high?
Sony's audience was split between PS3 and 360 (a completely different demographic from Nintendo's audience). PlayStations big drop-off was compensated by Xbox's spike in sales: Xbox One went from 24 mil sold to about 85 mil lifetime for the 360 (maybe up to 90 mil). The Wii's dropoff is compensated by what? It isn't Wii U sales. The novelty of the Wii wore off and people moved on, while the PS3 and 360 and their successors are still selling very well.
I added an edit to the post you quoted btw: "Notice how in the same year that the Wii had a 31% drop in sales- the PS3 and 360 were actually up yoy..." (Correction the PS3 was actually down 4% that year, but up the next).

Nintendo's downward sales trend is an argument for it being an anomaly, not a fad.
The dictionary definition of fad: something (such as an interest or fashion) that is very popular for a short time
The Wii had four or five years of great sales and that's not a short period of time and that's not a fad.

I've seen Nintendo fans say pretty much the same thing and no one blinks an eye. And what does the Vita have to do with this? He's pretty much right about everything. The only thing I would amend is that the Wii was only partially a fad. Yes, it had a great deal of people buy it who only played it a few times before shoving it under the TV, which is what being a fad means, but it also had a good number of fans who continued to play it thought its life-cycle. |
What's so hard to understand.
It's just the same scenario all over again.
Nintendo Fans are more sensible than other ones and that's how they react. They started mocking the ps vita exactly before WiiU was released cause they never expected WiiU could fail similar way but know they can stand being treated the same way.
If this interview was about vita all of the people complaining right know would say:"He is 100% right".(and he would be a liar saying something very much different)
The only thing he is wrong is that Wii was a fad-
Wii's software:hardware ratio is very high, pretty much the same level as ps360 maybe a little bit higher. This can't be a fad.

Fact is PS2 to PS3 drop is similar in userbase to Wii to WiiU, fact is WiiU is a lot more expensive that Wii ever was, fact is you are making up the WiiU LTD number.
Everything elso is just low-tier conjecture to fit your agenda.
