Forums - Nintendo - Indie dev defends Wii U and brings up a valid point.

"So few of the larger publishers interested in making things specific to a platform any more. "

" We'll be much poorer off as gamers if cross-platform homogeny sets the agenda for platform holders."

With all the focus on the negative news sorrounding Wii U it's nice to hear a dev say something positive. And they also bring up a very good point about games being the same across all platforms. It would be nice to see a game like Assassin's Creed totally revamped for Nintendo systems. If it's the same for all systems, naturally most people with multiple consoles will choose the better looking version. And that rings especially true for the 8th gen. of consoles. Very few people will want to get the inferior looking version of a game just for added Gamepad mechanics. I would, but I know that I am in the minority, recent sales numbers prove that.

But if games like Assassin's Creed were taken in a totally different direction, in gameplay and story. For example, if they made an AC spin off on Wii U that used Black Beard or James Kidd as the main character and had the story tie in with the existing ACIV story line. Then totally revamp the controls for AC and put in the option of using Wiimotes and Gamepad combo for the game. it would definitely spark more interest in multi console owners to get more than one copy of AC that year.

I would sure like to see more 3rd party support for Wii U but just porting the same game over to the system is not a formula that seems to be working. And it sure won't get easier to sell the inferior version as time goes on. And if they keep just porting, sadly, that's exactly what Wii U owners will get from 3rd parties- the inferior version of 8th gen games.

But devs can turn that point of view around and make the Wii U version an equal if not superior version by making it more unique. I know it'sa slim chance of it ever happening, especially with current Wii U sales trends, devs will be reluctant to take those kinds of risks with big selling ip's like AC. But as a multi console owner, I can't see myself buying the same game for multiple systems or buying the Wii U version if the game doesn't utilize the Gamepad properly or innovatively. But I would definitely buy a spin off or tie in that is totally different and I think a lot more people would also.

Hopefully Wii U's 2014 line up will turn things around and devs will start thinking of new ways to attract gamers to their Wii U offerings.

Indies seem to be the only one these days defending Nintendo which is interesting cause a few months ago... Everyone criticized Nintendo for not being friendly with Indies so I guess, at the very least, they seem to be improving on that aspect

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

i agree with his point. i love the exotic HW that Nintendo usually brings.
sadly homogeneization is inevitable
wheres the second law of thermodynamics when you need it?

I hope to see more indie games come to the Wii U. I've been enjoying what they have brought so far and love the way some of the games utilize the Gamepad. Unepic is a good example of how awesome having the touchscreen can be. They also did a brilliant job for off tv play.

What point would there be to only releasing the (hypothetical) game for Wii U? Unless they use the gamepad in a way that's absolutely crucial to the game (which is something that even Nintendo themselves haven't figured out how to do yet) to do something that neither the PS4 or XBOne can do, there's no reason not to release a game on all the other systems as well.

The point is making a game that plays differently from it's counterparts to attract gamers to their Wii U offerings which are currently selling poorly with the current formula of just porting. And adding Wiimote functionality to all games would be nice.

I can imagine an AC spin off or tie in doing quite well once the install base is larger.

Yes, but why would the game not bereleased on all the other systems as well? What reason would there be to make it Wii U exclisive?

thats nothing new, nintendo and sega had different games from 3rd partys.

Well, I guess if they made very good use of the gamepad and wii mote combo, it can offer something that can't be done on other systems. I love using the gamepad for the HUD on aciv, it leaves full screen view without anything in the way. And the gamepad offers a better mini map allowing you to see more of whats ahead and around you as well as the ability to zoom in and out of the map with much better detail than the mini map on screen. If they were to team that up with some awesome motion controls then it definitely would be a version that couldn't easily be ported or duplicated on another system.

Yeah I agree. I love exclusives.

I'm not going to make a game for PS4 and Wii U, but I'd love to make a PS4 game and a Wii U game. Plus being exclusive with smaller titles can really drive up sales.
