Zelda isn't a big seller like Mario.

Well, obviously I have a rooting interest in this debate

But, seriously, you need to factor in other criteria, not just sales figures. I'd argue Zelda remains the more relevant franchise, the more discussed franchise, the more acclaimed franchise, and the more beloved franchise.

More relevant to Nintendo , which itself is becoming irrelevant in todays industry

More dicussed franchise? How so?

The more acclaimed franchise? Factually wrong.

More beloved? Highly subjective

1) How is Nintendo becoming irrelevant? They've always dominated the handheld market, and continue to do so, and they innovated the industry with the Wii. How is that irrelevant?

2) I've seen quite a lot more threads on this forum about Zelda...

3) Factually wrong? So you deny that Zelda has one of THE MOST acclaimed game in all of history? The average metacritic score for Uncharted is 89. The average score for Zelda is: 91.7. YOU are factually wrong.

4) I agree, this is highly subjective. Let's discuss this again when the Uncharted series has turned 30 years old and is still getting rave reviews and doing solid numbers.

Ah-burn.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

No, that is still Gran Turismo

I wouldn't be so sure about that anymore... I think PS4 Uncharted and PS4 GT could be neck and neck.

Your figures are wrong, Ocarina of Time sold 7.5m on N64 and then the 3DS remake sold 3m.

But beyond the sales figures, Zelda has a larger fanbase, far more exposure to the mainstream, and a much richer history. Because of that it's far more secure, meaning the next Zelda is way less likely to tank than the next Uncharted.

The way this thread is set up, it can't be a serious statement. I think I'll forward this thread to toastboy to show him an example of how he can improve.

LoL! Not a bad idea actually :D

I haven't seen so much spin since the O'Riley Factor. :P

@Kane: I'm having trouble quoting.

I would argue Zelda is a more relevant franchise to the video game industry, to video game fans, and to video game critics and essayists. It has had a much greater impact on the industry in general and the action-adventure genre in particular. It is certainly more of a household name.

No, it isnt. It has a bigger legacy thanks to its 30 year life, but that should come at no surprise. Its more relevant to SOME fans, certanly not me, and some critics, not majority of them. It had more of an impact when NES was resurecting the industry, but since the 90's it had almost no impact, whereas Uncharted already had impact on games such as Tomb raider and star wars.

In terms of discussions, this is based only on my own observations, on this site and others, and in conversations with video game enthusiasts in the real world. I'm afraid I can't really quantify it. But I do believe Zelda causes more controversies and more heated debate, among the fan base and outside of it.

Well, at least you admited its by your own merits

More acclaimed really isn't up for debate. I'm not sure why you identified that as "factually wrong." In terms of aggregate critical scores, Zelda outpaces Uncharted. In terms of top 100 and top 10 lists, completed by fans and critics, Zelda games far outpace Uncharted games. Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past, in particular, are more critically-acclaimed than any Uncharted title.

What? Uncharted has a higher score on averige than Zelda, as for top 10/100 lists, you'd be hard pressed to find a list without uncharted 2 in it. And the franchise only has 4 games so far, whereas Zelda has 20+. And no LttP doesnt beat Uncharted 2 (95 vs 96) even tho UC2 has like 4 times more reviews to drag its averige score down.

Ocarina of time does beat it, but only with 22 reviews (compared to 100+ uc2 reviews). The score would have went down, had the game been reviewed more often. In fact, OoT on 3DS (an improved version of the game) fell short of UC2's score (96 vs 94)

And, lastly, of course "beloved" is highly subjective. I never said otherwise. Again, this is based on my observations. I have no evidence to support it. I think such evidence would be impossible to produce.

Fair enough

Umm.... Don't be stupid, Kane.

When you said that Zelda hasn't had a huge impact since the 90's, but Uncharted has already effected different games, you're forgetting that Uncharted isn't even 10 years old yet. Games in series as old as Zelda don't have huge impacts. Examples can be Sonic and Mario. While they sell well, (With the exception of Sonic Lost World) no recent games have made a huge impact on the industry like their older games did.

If you compare Uncharted's 4 games to Zelda's first four games. (Zelda 1 to Links Awakening) Zelda had a much bigger impact on other games than Uncharted has so far.

When you compare OOT 3D and Uncharted 2, you're forgetting that OOT 3D is a remake. You should have campared it to something else.

oh... I just hope this is not another dick size contest.....

Average: 4,42 x 4,6 million. Not a big difference , actually, for games with such huges sales.

Both are great franchises. But the latest Uncharted (for Vita) was dissapoiting while the latest Zelda (for 3ds) was amazing.

Subjective opinion.

Yep.
