They both extrapolate the totals from a percentage of retailers that they get numbers from. Not guessing but not perfect either. Short of getting every retailer working with you it would be impossible to get it 100% correct.

Strange that someone asks an important question like this but doesn´t stay around to discuss and get the answer.

It´s as if they wanted to start a discussion to break this site into two opposite sides fighting each other.

The NPD also has a much bigger workforce, professional expertise and connections to help more accurately estimate non-counted data. The NPD has professional relationships with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, it's not unlikely these companies supply shipment data to the NPD, so the NPD can more accurately estimate how many units were most likely sold at stores for which there are no absolute figures.

2 of the American mods on either sides of the US go into two stores, one a walmart and the other a Toys R Us. They find out how many Wiis were sold that week at each store, average them, and then multiply that by all the stores that sell games in the US. It is full proof!
