6 mil is probably a more sane prediction. The initial sales blitz is most likely winding down and we'll probably see a steady but much lower sales rate over the next several months.

It isn't. There are still many people with pre-orders. As long as there are no PS4s to be found on store shelves, factories are working at full capacity.

6 million is really not much, the system is gonna launch in Japan so its gonna sell ~500k there, that leaves around 1.3 million for 3 months everywhere else, or 400,000 units each month, distributed between US, EU, Asia, Middle East, India?

People are stupid, why run out and buy these consoles at launch? The have no games, and the ones they have mostly suck and the good ones that are coming out are on last gen systems....not much on the horizon for next gen games until fall. Also have hardware issues and instabilities. Not to mention Sony and Microsoft seem to be trying to leech money out of gamers with dlc, season passes, microtransaction, etc....and steambox is also on the horizon. I remember buying my 360 near launch and not ever even getting a hdmi port cause the original had 5 rca cables. Buying at launch is always a dumb move but the fanboys and idoit gamers seem to be multiplying.

How is this related with the topic?

Last gen consoles are 7 years old, an upgrade is neccesary if people want to play the games in 1080p

and why are people buying xbox720 than?

an on topic i would say 7,2 best case, 6,8 worst.  8m cant be done if the dont increase the output, i think the holydays strechted out the supplielines a lot, cant see em producing and shipping at max speed last weeks.

Aren´t those pre-orders already in the 4,2mi figure?

As anedoctal it can be many Gaffers claims Sony hasn´t resupply Brazil, India, Sweden, Norway, Australia, Colombia, Emirates... and the initial stock was really low.

NO. The 4.2m figure is SOLD TO CONSUMERS. (sell-through)

There are still millions of people with pre-orders who havent got a console yet.

I really dont see PS4 doing that well in Japan. The software simply isnt there.

And while the demand for the PS4 hasnt subsided, it eventually will over the next few months. I dont see them selling every single console they make like they have in the launch period. I think its crazy to assume that demand will remain that high post holiday season.

I'm going with 6 - 6.5 million.

Anybody knows when the 4 jan hardware sales come up?

Yup, I think it will do more though. I expect 50 million PS4 for 2014.

i hope you guys are really happy about those fantastic PS4 HW sales because SW are really slim ATM

edit: I think 6.5m sold by March its a very good figure and a possible one also

Really?

9.7m software to 4.2m hardware in the launch window?

2.3:1 ratio in two months is AMAZING for a launch console.

Pre-orders can't be counted in sold to consumrer figures... neither in shipments.
