Forums - Gaming - Kotaku: The Biggest Disappointments Of 2013 (X1 Kinect, Ouya, BF4, Lucasarts and more)

only skimmed the list but looks pretty solid.

Agreed.

+1 agree

BF4 is the most critical item for me.

I think the SimCity one is a little too extreme for me. The game was playable for me a short time after I got it on release day, and overall I enjoyed it.

Seems legit.

How can Kinect be a big disappointment when no one expected anything worth anything of it?

They didn't pull any punches with that list. I guess I can't really argue with it based on the things I've actually experienced. Damn.

Battlefield 4 is one of the biggest screw ups ever. I really think they should consider sunsetting this series before they embarrass its amazing earlier game pedigree even more than 3 and 4 already have...Aliens was horrible but I never really expected it to be great in the first place. Personally, I just don't get the Kinect...It is weird to me that someone wants to say Xbox, volume up, Xbox, volume up, Xbox volume up 10 times instead of just hold down a button on a remote for 3/4 of a second. I like how you can switch inputs like Netflix, Skype, and gaming with your voice, but tons of the voice commands are super gimmicky and I know I am never going to use them.

The problem is the game is still completely broken. (look at trash etc, it's impossible to get the city working properly because the complex calculations it was meant to do just simply don't happen. That's why it's included on the list. It's fun, but it's not the game it was sold as and probably never will be.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I can't speak to your personal experiences, but for me it was definitely more than a short time before it became playable.  Even then, the server issues were the least of the problems with the game.  Cheetah was still disabled for a long time after launch, and region interaction was still busted last time I played the game.

Even those things weren't the worst parts.  There was the fact that they sold the always online as required because of simulation being done in the cloud, even though modders were able to take it offline and continue playing.  Plus the simulation is incredibly poor in the first place.  They made a big deal about being able to follow individuals around from their home to work to etc.  However the people act no different from utilities.  They just travel in a line going to the nearest house or job.  This also leads to the traffic being completely broken.  The AI has very little intelligence and will take a dirt road packed with traffic over an empty three lane highway because it is a shorter distance.  Then when an agent finally gets to the last house on the street they will all turn back to find the next closest house.  This results in emergency services being unable to respond to things, people commuting to regional cities never arriving before the day is over, school buses never going to areas of town, etc etc. All of this leads to you having to exploit the system rather than just building a city in order to make one that functions.

Then there are the things like a lack of mod support so they can sell DLC.  The tiny city size.  Education independent of age, when you have a University you can destroy the grade school and high school.  The false population numbers.  There are probably more I am forgetting.

Now a lot of these things could have been changed or fixed, I haven't played the game in months, but it certainly deserves to be on the list in my opinion.
