Ah k, yeah I had seen the latest trailer, but I guess I didn't really pay attention to the items in it. I can see what you mean now, though. Guess we'll have to wait and see...but it sure looks like my usual defensive-style of play may not be an option. :(

Considering Double Dash!! did this already, I'm not all too upset, surprised, or intrigued about this change. Especially considering DD!! is the best Mario Kart ever released.

We'll still be able to evade them by dropping out of first thanks to the gamepad screen, but as for mushroom dodging, we have no idea. We haven't even seen the Blue Shell yet, which may mean it's getting tweaked yet again. Not sure if that'd be a good thing, since I feel MK7's Blue Shell is perfect.

:D That was kind of the point. I was usually ahead. (Except when playing in the tournament on here a couple weeks ago...that was a massacre. I blame not having played the game for almost a year. :p )
