Forums - Gaming - Why This Generation Won't Sell as Many Consoles as the Last

Home console dicussion only

1.) The casual crowd that flocked to Wii are now on tablets

2.) Payed online for PS4 and Xbox One. People will choose one or the other now, not both (which sucks I want to get a PS4 down the road but I'm not paying two online subscriptions).

But there are some things that might draw people in

1.) Kinect could be a hit

2.) Online multimedia abilities

3.) Cheaper consoles, on average, than last gen

Name some good and bad sides to this gen.

No, I'm not a consoles is domed kind of guy, but this gen will see a decline mainly due to Wii sales being so high I think.

4.) PS+ instant game collection, if advertised could get some people in.

5.) Emerging markets

A reason that should be added , their is no reason to own multiple consoles. Maximum of two this gen.

Who would have thought wii would sell over 100million consoles, the gaming industry is unpredictable but I'm thinking this gen can only sustain 2 consoles.

You forget about the new and emerging markets like China and India. These dwarf multi console owners. Consoles are getting more sophisticated and the industry is growing. Consumers are more tech savvy and communications are more prevalent than ever before. This gen will be huge.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Nothing too controversial here I'd say. Most of the casuals have gone and although the lower price of entry compared to PS360 at launch and emerging markets will help to counteract this, I'd broadly agree.

The exception is if something incredible happens like China buys 100m consoles this gen or something ridiculous like that, but that's pretty unlikely I feel

However, given that it seems highly unlikely that Nintendo will match Xbone or PS4 for sales, I expect this gen's best-selling console, whichever it is, to better than Wii did overall

I agree in general, and I explain it in this thread from a few days ago:

I Think there are many reasons, but mostly the exit of the casual crowd. If you think emerging markets will make up for the profitability of western markets? Not likely.

It is near the end of the end....
