I hadn't thought of that, getting rid of the premium would be a risky move. But if they matched it with substantial elite and 120gb hd price drops..........

@KN & Starcraft
The new Motherboard is called Jasper, it will have 65mn CPU and 65mn GPU. Supposedly coming out in Fall 2008
I don't think MS would release a new SKU without this new motherboard which is suppose to be quieter and cooler
Valhalla is set for 2010 release

I do believe there are some but I dont think it is as bad as you made it seem. I think that MS could plan to announce a new Sku and that could be reason for some of the shortages. We may learn more at GDC. |
Wow, Smurf, I am impressed. I think this is one of your best posts to date. Keep up the good work!

Microsoft has consistently thumped Sony month over month in the USA. In a month when there were LESS game releases for the PS3 than the 360 and NO notable titles for either, not to mention no price drops or SKU changes, NPD has Sony winning by some 30,000 consoles.
When this is combined with numerous consumer and retail reports of shortages followed by an official statement, how exactly would you characterise this shortage?

I was at my local superstore and they have 3 Elites and 3 arades on display, 1 PS3, No wii, and about 25 PS2's.
I am in Canada mind you, I guess we don't have as bad of shortages here.
Whenever a company goes near quiet, you always know that they are up to something. No company or division ever just "stops," but let me not be the first to say that Microsoft is ALWAYS up to something.
Lol, I agree that MS is always up to something. But the question is whether it is anything big. GDC is coming and its the only game conference on the immediate horizon. It would be the ideal time to announce new SKU's or bundles, in addition to the new game announcements we already know are coming.

It appears that all XBox SKU's at Amazon.com are marked as "Discontinued by Manufacturer: Yes".
Also, MS is looking for new staff to 'build a totally new LIVE experience': http://jobs.gamesondeck.com/jobseekerx/viewjobrss.asp?cjid=14209&accountno=266#Details
Could be an interesting GDC'08 though ;)

@ Mr. Scream
I noticed that ... I think my theory of MS rollin' out new SKUs is correct. I have been on a few sites and PS3 fans are rejoicing that the 360 is *finished.* They will be shocked when MS rolls out lower priced, more reliable SKUs, reveal their great gaming lineup and steal a major win with the episodic content for GTA. It's gonna be an interesting year for MS.
