Forums - Sales - Will the Harry Potter Wii title be FF7 great?

Sounds pretty neat even to me, gesture based spellcasting in the Harry Potter world on the Wii. I put some Preview materials in front of a few nephews of mine, they tend to be rather nonchalant about most things; but they greedily ate up my preview materials and were drooling over this game. Granted final implementation remains to be seen, but lets say they do it right. Could the Harry Potter Wii title end up being FF7 great? How much could they really sell given the light install base (expanindg to be sure, but at 6.6mill it would have a hard time being a mega hit neh?)

Opinions (Im interested in them)?

As I have stated a few times before, this game really caught my eye. I think its a perfect candidate for Wiimote control, and gfx/screens look solid - and as EA said - its a natural title to "lead" on the Wii (so they will be likely to put more effort into it). Not sure that comparing it to FF7 is a useful comparison though ;) Very different games, different target markets, etc. Can't see Harry selling well in Japan...

No.

It won't sell 7m copies worldwide and suddenly break a marketshare base (IE, FF7 actually sold in NA, a feat no other FF title did).

It'll sell 1m units worldwide, max.

*Edit* Harry Potter is actually quite popular in Japan. The movies grossed quite well there, and the movies are also strong overseas. I would say 350k copies in the US, 150k in Japan (maybe), and 500k in Europe (where the series is most popular)

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

By saying FF7 great i assume you mean as great of a game as FF7.....not "selling as well based on the market its tapping on the console its released on"

Dont ever compare a Harry Potter game to FF7, ever.

LOZ:TP has done equal if not better things with the Wiimote and its not going to come CLOSE to FF7, and Zelda is a proven franchise with hype and got acclaimed reviews......not happening for potter.

Seriously why would you compare that crap to Final Fantasy VII???? I'm not talking about sales or anything here, but that game looks shit and especially shit if you compare it to something like FF VII.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

you've never played it, it's not even out yet. You know, it's possible for a new, unproven game to be fantastic and be better than a proven franchise with a lot of hype. (Not that I think HP is going to do this. But don't discount a game you know next to nothing about)

i know youre just playing devils advocate....but for doing it in regards to saying the new harry potter game on the wii might be better than FF7 should mean you are permabanned from videogame play.

Well, I really like the idea of Harry Potter on Wii! And I dont really like Harry Potter, have only seen one of the movies, meh.

I think spellcasting could be cool, and that .... flying around on a broom game - sport - whatever(does it have a name) could also be a lot of fun. Can't think of any other specific stuff right now, but I think it could be brilliant, if they do it right...

As someone who does really want to see the next Harry Potter movie I can say a resounding no way in hell will the Wii version of the game be FF7 great. That's just not going to happen. On the other hand I think it could be a surprisingly good game if EA puts the effort in to what almost certainly will be the best selling verion of the game. There's going to be a lot of crappy games coming out this summer based on big blockbusters, and could Harry Potter turn out to be one of the best, of course it can.

Wrong. Across all platforms (and it IS coming to all platforms) it will sell a hell of a lot more than that. The first(I think it was the first) HP game sold 9 MILLION (maybe more) for EA. The Wii version may only sell 1m (or it may sell a lot more... who knows).

The HP gaming series has been on a downward slope for some time now, but Im hoping this is the game to finally translate potential into success. Combine the fact that the last book will be out soon, with the newest movie release - and there is going to be a lot of HP mania happening (soon).

"CEO Larry Probst attributed the growth to the company's broad support for new gaming systems such as Microsoft's Xbox and Nintendo's GameCube, particularly titles based on the "Harry Potter" movie, which sold 9 million units. Probst also touted improved results for EA.com, the company's money-losing online gaming arm."
