Not at all.
Suikoden titles are stand alone stories, though they sometimes have common characters you can recruit. Suiko V takes place hundreads of years after Suiko 4 and a decade or two before Suikoden 1, 2 and 3. There would be nods there if you had played the first two games, but nothing story related.
Think of Suikoden games like Zelda. They have a common thread but each game takes place in a different place with different characters. Though Zelda always features the princess and Link, they are also different people almost everytime. Gameplay wise they are completely different games though.
