Forums - Gaming - We would play video games at a way lower price.

Some month ago, I posted a message about how I thought that some games should be proposed for free or at least, at a way lower price. People reacted "badly", almost agressively. And I don't blame them, the industry, the analyst, the biggest studio's and publisher's head make you think it's impossible. But really it isn't.

A lot of you don't pay your movies anymore. Is the movie industry dead ? Lol, the movie industry has never been as good and as clean as it is today. Why ? Because people tend to watch a lot more of movies, and by doing that they're highly more critical and regarding than before. Yes of course, the biggest head of the industry make a lot less "easy" money than before by doing stupid movies, but it's deserved. Well deserved. Today, all you earn for making a movie is what you deserve for doing a movie, not less, not more. And just look at the industry number, it's well more than enough for the people who live on it.  The movie industry is cleaner than before and way fresher than before.

Same goes for the music. I remember when free music download were emering and when people (always the same huh, politics, analysts...) were screaming back then at the death of the industry. It was some 10 years ago. Where are those "people" know ? Where the musical industry is actually ? Where the musical artists are ? It's worth a smile really. People realised that musical artists were still earning a lot of money from their activities. And more than that, we discovered that free music plateform (Youtube for example) were helping the smaller artists or foreign artists from gaining popularity when it was almost impossible before. But like movies, sure, earning money from it's not as bland stupid as before. Like movie industry, this industry is way cleaner than before.

But you think it's the only two example ? Of course not.

You don't pay for Porn anymore, nor software, nor news, nor talking long discussion (skype, forums...), nor manga or anime... Or at least, you pay almost nothing for them. You don't pay for them. Are those industry dead ? Nope, of course they're not =/. But like the rest, it's not as easy to milk us as before.

Here in France, because I'm french, we used to pay something like 25 to 50$ for mobile or telephone or internet subscription. And I'm speaking of 25 to 50$ for EACH subscription. If you wanted to have a telephone, a mobile and an internet connection you could end up with a 90$ bills at the end of the month. It's crazy but it's true. Everyone here in France were explaining to us how it was already the lower price they could propose to us and bla bla blah. Of course, people believed it. Hey if analyst, politics, heads of the industry were saying it, it must be true. Then "Free" (a french commucation company) blown everything and everyone up, by proposing lower price than we could except back then. Mobile suscription for 2$, Telephone for 7$ and internet for 15$ at crazy speed. Now they're even proposing 4G for 2$ Oo. Every one, analyst, politics, rivals were speaking about the death of the industry. Guess what ? Free is one of the most healthier europe company and everyone here is happy as shit about those price and the service (except that youtube streaming sucks hard with free, but it's a fair price for what we have really). And more than that, all Free rivals had to dumped their price. Like every industry quoted above, no they're not milking us anymore, it's not as "free" as before. So of course they're crying their mother shit.

Is it possible for gaming ? Just think about the exemple above and ask it to yourself. ^^

Around the Network

1) Movies - They're much more mass media (you don't need to get a console or gaming PC in a household first, and they're more broader in terms of demographics) and they get additional revenue streams beyond movie theaters (DVDs, streaming)

2) Music - Doesn't require nearly as much capital as movies or games. Again, additional revenue streams via concerts, royalties, endorsements.

3) Porn - Doesn't require nearly as much capital as movies, games, or music. They have boobs too.

"you don't need to get a console or gaming PC in a household first, and they're more broader in terms of demographics"

Yep, and we don't need three or five home console too. One could be enough.

I so wish there was a good on demand HD sports service that worked on Smart TV's....I am really tired of spending over $90 a month for satellite subscription when almost everything can be watched on Hulu and Netflix in HD. Netflix even has streaming 3D options now...but millions of people all over the world like me have to continue to pay outrageous TV prices because we can't go without sports and don't want to rack up bar bills multiple times a week...TV is way more of a hassle on the wallet than video games...and TV providers, especially satellite providers with the best sports options have a total monopoly over sports fans, at least in the U.S.  If someone got major sports leagues to allow Netflix sports type services I would pay them monthly for rest of my life and ditch TV in a heartbeat.  Cost of TV is like buying 3 brand new games every 2 months.  LOL, that's 18 games a year...I definitely don't by that many games brand new per year...Actually with tax and whatnot it is prob 20 a year.  I buy somewhere in the 3-10 brand new per year range depending on what's coming out.

Developing games often takes longer and more people than a music album. For films, well, you don't need a console, just buy a ticket at a theater and watch. Much more mass media friendly than games.

Yep.
