Nintendo still have animosity towards Sony over the whole PSX fiasco. Nintendo would never go to Sony, theres to much bad history. If anything I believe theyd rather help Microsoft out of the 2. They don't have a bad history with Microsoft the way they do with Sony.

I'll have to disagree with you here.

While Nintendo may (or may not) still be upset by the SNES CD turned into PSX affair, they still share, albeit slightly, the same view when it comes to gaming than Sony does; as has been proven very clearly this gen, both see consoles as gaming devices that can also do other tasks, while MSoft sees them as multimedia devices that also plays games. It's a subtle but important diffeence in this kind of joint ventures. Also both Nintendo and Sony are japanese, something that while it's not as important as it used to be, still matter to some shareholders.

Besides, Nintendo weakest territory has always been Europe, and MSoft is still strugling here too, so the merging console would fight to win in the USA (probably ending first) and Japan, but will still lose in Europe. Going with Sony will ensure them being first not only in Japan but also in Europe and probably also in the USA.

But there is the other side that Microsoft are also catering for the family much more than Sony. The decison to not include the Eye on PS4 with every model is testamont to screw you casuals, we want hardcore.

With Microsoft Nintendo would be able to concentrate on games while Microsoft looks after the device and its many contoller options out of the box. Every box. Not just to 20% of the userbase who bought a Kinect.

Even just last year Nintendo and Sony took jabs at each other. Microsoft and Nintendo have never seemed to do that. Nintendo would never team with Sony. Theres to much blame and history there. If they dont go Microsoft they would just go full handheld. I dont think Sony would ever get a look in on Nintendo software ever.

Also dont forget Microsoft have released several games on Nintendo hardware in recent years. Particularly Rare games on Nintendo handheld. Microsoft have much more respect from Nintendo than Sony do.

I think this may happen in 5 to 10 years, or a deal with Google/Apple/MS, etc. Nintendo is a gaming only company, and they can't take losses the way that Sony and MS could for years. The handheld market is declining, and that was always their fall back. The other option is the Nintendo phone as a way to diversify and survive the smartphone era, but they would need a partner for that, maybe Google.

Microsoft doesn't have a handheld, and the games they launched (sorry, I only remember Viva Piñata and Zoo Tycoon) were oriented to the younger gamers, which was more likely to have a DS than an Xbox360.

Including Kinect can be seen as a move to cater the casual audience, but that is not the Nintendo audience, they are just part of the whole gaming community and Nintendo convinced them to get their console during last gen. Also, since including the device makes the system 100 USD/EUR more expensive than its main competitor, it could be argued that not including the camera and therefore launching a cheaper less expensive system would be a better aproach to expand the userbase, which is Nintendo's approach.

We could argue about which decision/alliance would be the best one, putting all our reasonings on to why one is better than the other, but in the end the truth is that none of this will happen. Nintendo will remain alone and doing their own, even if that means failing and become a third party.

Well, they already tried that. Actually, the all PlayStation thing was caused by a failed deal with Nintendo...

MS considerd buying Nintendo: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/moore-microsoft-considered-buying-nintendo/1100-6197832/. I have read about it some years ago.

I think it would be a massive mistake on Nintendo part to consider a partnership with Sony. The PlayStation brand has fatal flaw with is it over reliance on Third Party software to sell their consoles. Without Third Party support the Playstation brand would not even exist.

While Sony had the majority market share in the important core audience with their first two consoles. It only took the initial failure of their third console to lose half that market share to Xbox Brand. This really demonstrates the flaws of relying on Third Party publishers to sell systems and it very likely only going to get a lot worse in the future with the rise of cloud gaming. Cloud Gaming platform offers finally a realistic and a lot more profitable way forward for the big Third Party publishers to go away from releasing games on consoles. IF a Third Party Publisher created their own cloud gaming streaming platform their would be massive benefits of:

No Console royalty fees.
No used Games.
Piracy would near non existent.
Very lucrative subscription fees going directly to Third Party publisher.
Earn royalties off indie/smaller developers for publishing on their platform.

While I can't see this happening any time soon it is a near inevitable that the Big Third Party developers will abandoned consoles in favor of their own Cloud Gaming platform some point in the future.

I don't think it shows that they have a bad situation. Nintendo went form 90% share with NES to less than 60% with SNES and a little more than 20% with N64 even with first party games.

The big difference is Nintendo has First Party game portfolio which is profitable enough to support their console on their own. This is luxury that neither Sony or Microsoft has. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Sony/Microsoft will eventual build first party portfolio which matches Nintendo in the sales sense. But looking at their previous attempts by either company I seriously doubt they will ever be able to.
