Forums - Gaming Discussion - Insomniac ends acquisition rumor, eyes multiplatform titles

If Insomniac went multi-platform that would be a huge blow to Sony. Sony owns and could give the franchises to other companies, but Insomniac has been the only developer truely cranking out AAA exclusive titles for PS3 consistently. To me, Insomniac is Sony's golden child.

This would be like Bungie going multi-platform.

Around the Network

If Sony published the games (i.e.: Jak, Uncharted, Ratchet, Resistance, etc.) the IP's are theirs. Insomniac, or ND could go and make games for other people, as long as it wasn't published by Sony. So there'd be no Ratchet on the Wii or anything like that.

Isnt this old news?

Is this any different than Bungie?

Yes, because MS has right of refusal on all Bungie games.

Meaning they can publish any games for any platform that Bungie produces. Meaning that there won't be any non-360 Bungie title anytime soon (well, an outside shot of a DS title maybe).

If anybody buys them, it will be Sony, but I think they'll stay independent for quite a while. I also think they'll stay 2nd party, since, as he said, they're treated like 1st party by Sony. That certainly has it's benefits. ^^

The benefits wouldn't be as significant as those of going multiplatform.  I think going multiplatform makes good financial sense for Insomniac and it is all but inevitable if they want to retain their independent status.

Around the Network

I've seen a lot of people reading too much into these statements on various message boards.

I remember reading statements similar to this one everytime someone asks Insomniac about multiplatform development. They're not up to it and don't really want it. The reason as to why they can boast having the best work enviroment in the gaming industry is because they're a small and independent team. They do not want to be taken over and they don't want to have a big staff.

Did we not know that Insomniac were independent?
Anyways, good post elnino! Keep it up!

Pretty misleading thread (and article) title.

Insomniac eyes multiplatform titles!

Reporter: Will you make Multiplatform titles?

Insomniac: No, we aren't set up to do it, but we see that it makes a lot of sense for other companies.

Reporter: Sooooooo.... you're confirming Ratchet and Clank for the Wii?

Insomniac. No.

Reporter: Resistance  3 for the 360 then?

Insomniac: No.

Reporter: You heard it here first, folks! Insomniac developing for non-Sony platforms.

Is called reading between the lines.  They make sure that everyone knows they are independent which means they can decide today to go make a game on the another system.  They may not be ready at the moment but could be in the future.  Hell they could do resistance part 2 and then just focus on Wii or 360 game etc.  If they are independent as they say then the chances are there for multi.

Which really isn't a different position than they were in a year ago, or two years ago.

It has always been true that they're independant, and it has always been true that they could switch it up and make multiplatform titles or even go MS/Nintendo exclusive.
