Forums - Gaming - Game journalism makes tabloids about celebrity dating look respectable

Seriously, I have a postgrad in journalism, and the sheer lack of professionalism, sensationalist clickbait, deliberate misinterpretation and fact twisting that goes on in video game journalism is simply unbelievable.

I mean, I came to terms with it being pathetic years ago, but it still continues to surprise me at just how low it can sink. The bar just keeps getting lower asnd lower with each passing month.

Fundamental journalistic values like objectivity and accuracy don't even seem to be on the radar, much less a priority. It's one thing to not check your facts and spew it across every corner of the globe via the internet, but it's another thing entirely to deliberately, knowingly propagate misinformation.

It's bog standard tripe that just about any other industry would be ashamed of.

smaller websites are always the best, large gaming journalism websites are quite clearly pushing out whatever gets them the most clicks. just look at the recent Naughty Dog calling Nintendo irrelevant crap even though he is an ex-employee of them, pure flame bait

I can only assume that your published articles aren't anything like the threads that you post on here, otherwise that would be some delicious hypocrisy.

Sadly, I must agree. This seems to be more true day by day. There's another thing though... I don't think that there is such a thing as "true" professional journalism. Each one lay his or hers allegiances with varying subtlety. The bottom line is the money and I tend to believe that this is the case everywhere.

Known professionals, respectable media, famous showhosts, all of them, care about the money above all. Not true and fast delivery of information and analysis. The real professionals are those that manage to keep allegiance and bias out of sight.

Gaming journalism is a rather young branch. People do not have great experience yet. Even the well-known ones. It has to do with the genre still receiving the "brand" of children's play and therefore bereft of seriousness. Of course, these are all personal opinions.

This, I stole from grandpa...It's called soap.

But at the same time MSM articles about gaming seem to be written mostly by journo's with absolutely no appreciation for gaming and a woeful lack of fact checking. So gaming is poorly served by almost all media.

I'm not disputing what you are saying, but do you have a specific example that recently caught your attention? Would be nice to have some reference point as to what you are referring to.

Of course not, just like I talk to my Grandmother in a different way than I talk to my college mates. ;)
