I don't think anything is certain this gen. MS are chasing a much wider audience than Sony is, if that works then even if Sony wins the gamers mindshare then MS may win the console gen. It is impossible to really tell at this point in time.

What does MS offer the wider audience that would get them to shell $500?

Most game consoles aren't moved at launch price. To coin a term... its a jog, not sprint.

MS has had more success at appealing to casuals thanks to the Kinect. Sony has chased after that same audience as well with little success.

Actually, marathon is a better word. The casual audience are never around for long. Ask Nintendo.

Yes ask nintendo about 37mil+ 3DS's! Great Work Nintendo

It's true that the 3DS is selling well because of the casuals but don't forget how many casuals left for smartphones from DS to 3DS.

It's true that the PS3 is selling well because of the hardcores but don't forget how many hardcores left for smartphones from PS2 to PS3.

At this point there's just no way PS4 doesn't win the 8th gen home console race, M$ and Ninty have shot themselves in the foot too badly to compete.

Ps4 will not dominate Japan. It will be lucky to outsell vita which it will not. Vita will and is getting more third party support that is japanese and still is flopping. The market is ok with ps3 and 3ds really. No console has a chance.

It will dominate home console wise.  Given that it will launch at a lower price than the PS3, the Wii U isn't doing so hot there (I see it ending ~4M-5M), and I definitely see the Xbox One performing worse there than the 360 (probably end up ~1M), I think its safe to assume the PS4 should at least best PS3's 10M-11M.  So, probably 12M-14M.

Not only that, PS4 sold out in Japan only hours after being announced..

It all comes down to the games. Same reason the PS3 is now leading...

Presumably you define "win" by "sold the most individual consoles"? Sony is looking good, but its early days and we have to see how they cope with the post-Christmas drought.

If you define it by being the most profitable, then Nintendo is still in with a chance with their conservative approach to hardware.

If you define it by who has the best games, then it's still up for grabs, I reckon.

Sony doesn't win this gen because they skipped the 8th gen and PS4 is really a 9th gen console. Yeah, I said it. Come at me.

Uh... 0?

if there is one thing that i learned last gen it is that momentum can change over the course of a gen.

i think ps4 is pretty much guaranteed an early lead. more stock, lower price, more games. but xbox could come back. maybe this whole HDMI in thing works for them. i'm not excited about it but maybe others or maybe it evolves over time. maybe a huge exclusive. maybe something entirely out of left field.

point is,.. don't count xbox out yet.

MS had opp to be 1st but bad public image now. no chance to fix. Sony win landslide

My point was last gen things went bad for from just about day one ms had alot go well for them, ps3 still eventually  passed it
