Forums - Microsoft - Recent events make the XO power difference seems less of an issue to me

Well, looks like part of the premise of the OP, that Ghosts looked identical, was wrong! Turns out the PS4 verion wasnt running 1080 because of a bug...will have to see when new comparison vids surface.

OTOH NFS Rivals was announced 1080P on both, so score one for Xbox.

It is always good to hear that people are going to be happy with their purchase.

Isnt that the point?

I will always rate: Story > Gameplay > Graphics > Audio

You can't tell the difference between up-scaled and native on a 50 inch screen? :P

Well, i was going to explain it to you, but others have already done so.  Obviously there is a difference, but it is beyond what the human eye can see unless you are sitting way to close to your tv.  In which case you are probably going to ruin your eyes pretty soon so you wont be ab,e to see a difference anyway . Like I said, this whole resolution thing is a very minor, pointless thing to argue about.  This is coming from somebody that plans on getting a ps4 first, by the way.  Im not trying to downplay it to make the x1 seem better or at least equal.  It really does not matter to me at all, and it really shouldnt matter to anyone.

53 PPD was based on Steve Jobs claim that the magic number for a screen to be Retina Quality is 300 PPI at 10-12 inch viewing distance, which comes out to 53 PPD. It was a controversial claim, with notable people on both sides of the debate, for instance retinal neuroscientist Bryan Jones backing up Steve Jobs' claim by saying that it holds true to the average person (20/20 vision). Personally, the highest PPD screen that I've ever played a game on was at about 65 PPD, and I couldn't notice any difference compared to my current 54 PPD screen. In fact, I've gamed as low as 40 PPD recently, and 40 PPD still looks quite good to me. My eyes are corrected to 20/20 by glasses, maybe you have better than 20/20 vision? Personally, I feel like resolution is the least important factor when it comes to overall graphical quality, I'm glad that Microsoft gave developers permission to decide the optimal combination of resoltuion and graphical effects for their games instead of locking them into 1080p at the cost of other graphical effects. Ryse looks simply gorgeous at 900p because they turned up other more important graphical settings, and even Dead Rising 3 looks quite good at 720p because of overall better textures, lighting, and other visual effects compared to any current gen game, to think that games are only going to look better as the generation progresses, I have no graphical qualms about buying an Xbox One whatsoever.

Ah the controversial retina quality. It's not far off anyway as 30 cycles per degree is the general accepted number for 20/20 vision. However 20/20 vision is based on the distance at which you can make out the smallest distinct letters and shapes, that's not the end at all for visual quality. It's the end where you can make out the grid pattern of the screen, yet you still need heavy AA for a nice picture plus sub pixel detail is still very distracting. (flickering power lines for example)

I game as low as 38 ppd (720p on my projector) and although it takes a bit of getting used to with a new game, it can indeed still loook quite good. Doesn't mean it's great. You say you rather have more detail and effects. The problem is when you start adding more detail and increase the draw distance the resolution becomes more important. It's all tied together. You don't want to play a game made for 720p in 480p, while 320x200 was plenty for Doom. Increasing the detail without the resolution to be able to see the detail is pointless and runs the risk that the extra detail starts to become distracting.

It depends on the game ofcourse. Ryse doesn't look all that complex and all the action happens up front, but in a racing game or FPS being able to resolve details in the distance is quite important.

I rate games pretty much the same as you, except that graphics and audio are tied for me.

Good audio trunks graphics for me, though I put them in this order cause I do play a good deal of games with the sound off (listening to music and whatnot).

Hell making them equal isnt a bad idea tho, bad audio can destroy a game...some of the terrible localized JRPGs attest to that one, where bad graphics I can forgive.

There are no graphical issues on either console.

A typical person playing games will not notice a difference between the two consoles.

Sure, if you freeze a game, take a screen shot and put them side-by-side you can tear one or the other apart, but when people are playing they are not going to be thinking, "Geez my version stinks compared to the other console"...

Also, the X1 is not under powered. As compared to most typical gaming PCs it will run circles around them. So to say it is under-powered is only when compared to a $3,000 gaming PC or the PS4... Compared to the Wii U, 90% of PCs, and most other consumer devices it is a powerhouse. And while Sony fans like to talk about their technical specs, the generation will be long and as it progresses things will be more about the cloud, streaming games, and other things related to the architecture of the consoles.

I don't get why Microsoft fans always attack Sony fans in these topics, lol, never the Nintendo gamers or PC gamers.

I can buy a $500 PC that runs circles around the Xbone, btw.

$525 overall.

Xbone = $500 + 6% tax = $530.

And that PC build is IF you want windows, if you already have windows or don't want it, you can use that extra $90 to get a 7870 and a better CPU.

So yeah.

It was not an attack, I was just stating that X1 is not under-powered as many people are putting it out to be.

As for your $530 PC...  It is still more expensive then X1... And you didn't include time and labor to put it together, not to mention install the OS, all the drivers, and get your app/game library on it.  And outside of the PSU and CPU, you bought a bunch of "crap" parts (Gigabyte MB are crap, the case you chose is like the titanic, ASUS aren't known for the best graphic cards [even though they are using a radeon chip], the keyboard/mouse aren't suitable for gaming) .  And where is the blu-ray drive, ESRAM, and Kinect V2.0?  If you are going to build a gaming PC, please do it right and not out of a bunch of crap that won't even last a year.  PS:  Windows is licensed through the HDD, so to be legal you do have to license a new OS to the computer.

TIme and labor? You put the PC together yourself and it takes only about a hour to put it together. -.-

Also, my PC has faster RAM, GPU, and CPU. How is it crap? I also included a copy of windows and it still was $5 less than the Xbox One. So how was it more expensive? lol. Oh and if the keyboard and mouse aren't suitable here's a solution, swap them for a cheap $20 xbox controller.

Honestly do you have any idea what you're talking about? Because it doesn't seem like it.

Well to be honest it is a pretty shitty PC set up... But the aim was to stay in the 500 bucks area.... Yet if I had the choice between that built already assembled and an XB or any console really... I would still go with the console... And a lot of people would.... I have close to 0 interest in PC gaming anymore... Too nerdy for me now.. it was fine until mid college... Now the appeal has faded off... I play the occasional RTS on it and that's it.... No PC can truly satisfy my entertainment needs anymore... Yeah they are more powerful and outperform consoles on everything.. But the practicality, ease of use and set up of the consol outshadows what a PC offers for me...especially at that price point...

100% agree OP.

Before the MS 180, I too was prepared to skipping this generation. But now, and especially after a certain 1080p PS4 exclusive received poor reviews, I am fine with my console of choice (Xbox one) and any potential shortcomings, which are starting to appear more and more irrelevant.

At the end of the day, the game has to be good, regardless of the resolution. 1080p does not make a game better.  1080p does not make an ugly game look better. The multiplatform differences are slight, the difference bewteen 360 and PS3 was much greater. More and more people will come to realise this. Arguably, 1080p is PS4's greatest weapon, but thus far, it appears to be firing blanks.

Dat sickening denial

That $530 PC, would be massively cheaper when compared to the Xbox One in several years time. You have to pay for online remember.
I can build a PC, Install the OS and all the drivers and software I need within about an hour, it's hardly difficult or time consuming.

As for the parts... Gigabyte motherboards aren't crap, Asus Graphics cards aren't crap either, I have been running three Asus Radeon 7970's for almost 2 years and I had a pair of Asus Radeon 6950's that were 3 years old (Sold, still runs almost everything at max at 1080P) etc'.
And I'll likely be getting three or four Asus Radeon R9 290's.
A horrible motherboard brand would be something like Biostar.

Gigabyte has some of the best motherboards on the market and Asus has some of the best Graphics cards on the market with some of the best coolers too, granted Asus cards don't have the fine grained voltage controls like high-end MSI cards, but they are far from trash.

Optical Drives are last century stuff, PC has moved on from them, Steam is where it's at, I don't have an optical drive in my PC and I've never needed one.

As for Windows being licensed to the Hard Drive? That's completely utterly down right false.
It's tied to your motherboard, all it takes is a phone call to Microsoft and they will untie it.

You also have free alternatives to Windows such as Linux which can run a massive library of games either natively or through WINE or via emulation such as Dos Box.

eSRAM is also not a replacement for large and high-speed GDDR5, lots of fast and large memory is preferable over a fast small chunk of memory, however Intel IGP's have eDRAM if that floats your boat: Hint: It's slower than a Radeon 7850.

And lastly, Kinect works on PC, but al-as, the real innovation is coming with Oculus Rift. - The PC also has 120/144hz 1440P monitors available now, which puts to shame the 720P/1080P/30fps/60fps set-ups that consoles use.
And don't forget the larger game library the PC has, the free online access, cheaper games and more games AND with Steam you can set it to big-picture mode, plug in an Xbox controller, connect it to your TV and it's as easy to use as a console all with better graphics and framerates, mods etc'.
