I use significantly more than 500GB on my PS3. PS+ is a killer when it comes to hard drive space. I imagine it will be worse for the PS4 as time passes.

500 GB should be enough like for launch, but it you take into account that disc based games cache large amounts of data on the HD and that there's around six years of PS+ ahead of us, a larger HD will be necessary if you don't want to worry about freeing space all the time. Also the actual available space of the stock HD will be a little over 400 GB.
