Forums - Gaming Discussion - GT5P - 100% Mandatory Install

ofcourse GT5:P has to install to the harddisk, because it's just the disc version of a downloadable game and therefore is coded to run from the HDD

I was thinking the same, otherwise it would make no sense. If the downloadable file size is the same as the size of the disc version install I think it is obvious.

Having said that, it is also quite obvious that people who buy the disc version are disapointted to see that the disc is just a distribution media and the actual game is fully copied to the HDD instead of retaining some of the data on the disc to save space. I'm not totally happy with that either, but I don't necessarily see this as a sign of things to come, apart from games available both as downloadable and on blu-ray.

I think that we have to wait for this to becmoe the norm for every game that comes out, but with games like Ratchet and Clank, and Uncharted. Games that look and load great, but don't install. But when games like that have installs, I think number two will come true. I'm just hoping that this will be the end of it.

What I find hilarious...

1/ This gets WORSE as the size of content on BluRay discs increase. Developers waste space... because its there to be used. But then it gets copied to your hdisk, 'cos the BluRay isn't fast enough to load it? What comes next - 200Gig games, 2hr installs, 1TB hard discs needed?

2/ The console doing the best - the Wii - the one with the smallest media size, no hard disk - quickest load times, no install times - and the weakest hardware.

Priceless.

I quite like the idea for HD installs, remove the need for the disk as well while you're at it.

Will preserve the laser on the drive as its spinning less, and the HD is easily replacable.

It'll never happen, but I'd prefer it.

I guess in some ways Microsoft's console is better adapted than Sony's (i.e. GAMING)

That's probably not the reason at all.  I wasn't involved with the PS2 scene so I don't know how the HD loader for PS2 worked but as far as the original Xbox you could rip discs to the HD all day (if modded and you had a big HD) and they'd play just fine regardless of the location change.

Plus that doesn't explain why DMC had a lengthy install.

sigh.. Warhawk was a full install to.. you people need to realize this is the age we are in. Just remember to clear out useless data or upgrade your HDD eventually.

No, it's just the age you want to believe we're in but we're not there yet. As consoles take longer to setup and configure and more PC characteristics are added I don't doubt that such an age is a possibility in the future.

I love PC gaming, pure and simple, but there are things it can keep. Post release patching and bug fixing along with installations are among them.

I don't like the idea of upgrading a console, no matter how easy it is to do.

I bought a 60GB PS3 and the idea that I should keep at least 10GBs open at any point in case the next game I buy needs an install is annoying. I also don't feel like upgrading the HDD. That's annoying, too. I may as well go back to PC gaming if that's the kind of stuff I'm going to be dealing with in the new console world.

If HDD tech was cheap enough where Sony put 200GB drives into every PS3, this wouldn't be a big deal. As it stands now, if anyone buys a 20GB PS3 (used or new, if they find one), they may as well write off another $50-100 to upgrade the drive so they can play more than two games without uninstalling and reinstalling software.

The best part of console gaming for many is arguably the low entry cost. Forced upgrades to just keep playing negate that advantage as well.

well then I guess nintendo, microsoft, and sony needs to shut down all their download services due to storage contrants. They were such horrid ideas anyways. Who would want to download a classic game or a brand new small fun game anyways. Its beyond me. /sarcasm

Either you're not intelligent enough to understand what I wrote (the part you bolded) or you didn't read it; either way what I said and what you just said are unrelated.

 i understood what you said.

Upgrades or exteral solutions arent cheap

So my comment fits perfectly because downloadable services could force customers into having to spend extra cash to upgrade their consoles or buy external solutions (external HDD).

So did I really miss your point? or are you not inteligent enough to understand?
