41. Chrono Trigger (SNES, also on DS, VC, PSN & PS)
There aren't many JRPGs like this one, it really stands out in the genre as an absolute gem of a game. The characters were all interesting, the epic story felt like a true odyssey through time and with multiple paths and endings this really does still stand as one of the best games ever made. The graphics have aged pretty well too with some of the more impressive artwork of the 16-bit generation.
Clue for 40.
I am the Alpha and the Omega. First released in '99 and a risky game for the time.

'Super Metroid'
for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) released in 1994 as played on WiiU.
Considered a classic, 'Super Metroid' wasn't even on my list last year. 2013 has been the year where I completed this game for the very first time ever on the WiiU. I got it as as one of the 30th Anniversary Famicom promo-games for just 30 cents. And 30 cents for such a classic is indeed a steel. Now I finally know why this game is considered a classic, because in short, it's quite brilliant.
I had played the game before though. A long time ago, when the SNES was still in it's prime, but I didn't remember anything about it. I could start this game and it would feel fresh. It would feel new. New, for a game that's almost 20 years old. Needless to say, I was amazed. The game offers considerable challenge and superb gameplay.
Sadly I thought the game was a little light on the story-side. It worked well enough for what it was, but the non-linear nature of the game undid the story a bit. Luckily, that non-linear part is probably the best thing about the game. The world is vast, and has a ton of things to discover. Backtracking was done the right way, and none of the parts in the game felt like a chore. Non-linear done right. I also took me a respectible amount of time to finish this game, searching every nook and cranny. And when I finally did, I still had only found about 80% of the collectibles to find!
#40 Hint
This game, released this year, has a subtitle in the Americas, but just a numerical in Europe and Japan. For whatever reason.
#40 Hint: Perfect ninja kit: katana, shuriken, grappling hook, poisoned rice.

41. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl (last year 35), first impression 8, replayability 7, technical 8
Pros: this game too had a decent postgame (less in trainers to fight and more in large new areas that opened up after beating the elite IV), a wide selection of legendaries to keep you running. Since i skipped Gen III, the game also wins a larger place in my heart than Black and White for being my re-introduction to Pokemon.
Cons: The post-game is a little light compared to others. A little over-reliant on pre-existing Pokemon.
Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.
