What I find weird is that GameGrumps has done other Mario games before SM64, like Sunshine, Super Mario World, Super Mario 3D World, etc.

It may be a result of the cumulative views from GG, the SM64 HD thing, Smash, Mario Kart, Mario Maker, etc. Lots of buzz around the character recently.
