Forums - Sony - PS3 numbers were fine in Germany, now they are undertracked! (my opinion ba

This site is mostly about sales, so lets talk about them.

LTD Germany by VG Chartz
350,998 (now)
424,559 (before adjustment)

Total sales for 2007 by GfK
309,000

Do not forget that GfK covers only 80 % of retailers, so how much is 100 % then? I will tell you, 100 % would be 386,250. Which means that PlayStation 3 sold 386,250 in 2007 (Germany only), but now we have February. Lets add current (2008) numbers from Germany using VG Chartz numbers.

386,250 + 29,730 = 415,980

I think 415,980 is much closer to 424,559 than 350,998. Maybe I am wrong, but I want to know why the numbers go down, when they was in margin of error, ioi please share your opinion with us, thanks.

-.-

Ok. Let me explain how this tracking thing works.

They track 80% of retailers and extrapolate to get an estimate of the total sales. They do not track 80% of retailers and post those numbers.

kthx.

I think Gfk tracks 80% of the market, and the numbers they release are scaled to 100%

lssun, you don't even understand how they track the numbers and you're making this pointless thread. All you need to know is the numbers are closer now than they were before. Hopefully the other numbers in the different countries are closer so these stupid threads aren't made anymore. It should surprise no one that the ps3 numbers were too high in some of these PAL countries.

I beg you pardon, you tell me what I need to know? ...and “sales thread“ on the site about sales is pointless?

It's very good that the numbers are adjusted when needed. It only shows commitment by the site for accuracy. All the numbers are still estimates, and
adjusting them for better ones gives this site credibility.

But, discussion and information about the numbers and why they are adjusted must be released, especially when they significantly change the numbers, otherwise people are wondering about the source of the numbers.

Lost my faith in VGChartz. Too many stupid and ignorant Americans, even as moderators.

It's a shame, really. "The Boss" should do something radical about this Americanization, but it seems hardly feasible, so my days here are numbered.

@Rath, Devilstation, erikers
Die GfK deckt mit ihren Zahlen zum Konsolenmarkt gut 80 Prozent aller Vertriebskanäle ab. Die tatsächlichen Verkäufe liegen daher etwas höher.

This doesnt mean that they left out the missing 20 percent but most likely scaled their numbers based on their 80%

I have a strange feeling you do not speak German.

Even if their numbers are only for 80% of the retailers, it doesn't mean they correspond to 80% of the total sales. The retailers they don't track might be much smaller than the other ones. They might also be bigger, the point is that we don't know which one's the case.
