Forums - PC - How to get speedy wi fi for desktop?

I just built a pc, In a basement suite so all my devices are connected to the router which is many floors up. My laptop is super  fast, but my desktop takes like 30 mins to download like 12 mb.. It's using a wi fi usb adapter which was suppose to be fast.

is there any options on how to speed things up?

any input would be great.

What is the maximum transmission rate of your WiFi adapter? What is your maximum bandwidth? Is it faster if you are close to the router?

A WiFi repeater might be what you're looking for.

averaging about 30 mbps. the adapters max is 300 mbps. Cant get closer to router. It just just the desktop is very slow, where the laptop is fast. downloading games on steam is impossible

How many is "many floors" up?

If the problem is distance or attenuation from solid surfaces (a basement probably has a pretty solid ceiling), and you can't cable between them or bring them closer together, the only options would be directional signal equipment or as KH mentioned a signal repeater.

The latter option is probably the best in most situations... if it's your ground floor/basement ceiling causing a signal loss you would probably have to install the repeater at the top of basement stairs.

I've heard good things about these and they seem to be quite popular http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-PA411KIT-AV500-Powerline-Adapter/dp/B0084Y9N3O/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1383234180&sr=8-4&keywords=internet+power+cable

Test the desktop next to the router first... before you spend any money... rule out its not the wifi adapter or some silly setting..

btw good to see you have your own build pc up and running!

the router is 2 floors up. I see that some people use home built attenas, i wonder if its somthing i should try out. I did move the adapter around found a new spot where it gets a better signal. But as far as online gaming goes i am concerned

then just get a wifi signal extender or a new , bigger, antenna for the router
