Forums - Gaming - Now that next gen is here, diminishing returns is a real problem

I can't wait until books have diminishing returns. I am tired of them to be honest.

Regarding BF4, i played the 360 beta and it was basically a ps2 game in comparison to the PS4 MP videos.  Next gen is looking good so far on the PS4.

Cross gen titles are a bad point of comparison

But the same can be said of the next gen exclusives so far  to some extent.

They look good, but not mind blowing or like a different world to PS360.

Whereas 360 launch had PGR3 which blew my mind and was DEFINITELY next gen.

But then again I dont have PS4/X1 yet, so maybe in person some game will impress me.

people said the same thing when the X360 launched, it doesn't help that the last generation was so long and the new consoles are a bit on the dissapointing side in terms of specs tho.

Just remember when people were calling the 360 Xbox 1.5 because of shit like this

yea launch titles mostly look like shit, with a few exceptions

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

I think the jump won't be as big for many as the last gens but it will be still a big difference. killzone as example has so many improvements to shooter on this gen and it is only a launch title. sure, it is from one of the most capable developers if we talk about graphics so that killzone looks maybe already better as some other shooters we will see the next year but “killzone 5“ will surely look much better as shadowfall.

PS4 is current gen, Confirmed

It really doesn´t matter much. As time passes, developers will learn how to get better graphics, but that doesn´t mean that games will haver better gameplay. We already have realistic enough graphics, I want to know that developers are going to do with all that power regards to gameplay.

Threads about diminishing returns always put a hurt to my face from so many facepalms I perform on myself...

With my usual example, let's talk about diminishing returns when we have something like this in real time:

AC4 has almost no difference indeed but BF4 is a huge difference.

PS2 in HD - best of a kind

PS3 - best of a kind

PS4 - first of a kind

I really have to wonder what a "facepalm" is in the context of "performing it on yourself" :)

But as for diminishing returns - I think you misunderstand the term. It simply means that, beyond a point,  the hardware cost of achieving a specific quality of graphics is more than the value of that graphic to consumers. It does not mean that the quality of the graphics is unattainable, or undesirable, but simply that you need so much $$$ to get to it, that most people are not willing to pay for it.

The PS4 is let's say 10 times more powerful than the PS3, but are the games going to be 10 times better looking? For Sony to produce a console with 10 times better graphics than the PS3, it would have to produce a very expensive console indeed.
