Forums - Gaming - What happened to 3D Gaming?

Ladies,

there is so much talk about resolutions and framerates going on as if those 2 things would define the visuals of a game. Another feature is totally left out and that is 3D gaming. What happened to 3D gaming on consoles?

Assassin's Creed IV on PS4 seems to be the only game to offer 3D gaming. Sony used to push this one really hard and it flopped even harder. So was 3D gaming just a fad / gimmick or is it here to stay?

If there are dozens of games offering 3D experiences just let me know.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Even Nintendo are distancing themselves from 3D now with the 2DS and Pokemon not using 3D for large parts of the game.

It's great when watching some films (not all) but tbh, it's not something most people want all the time. When you factor in that a fairly substantial proportion of the population cannot actually see stereoscopic 3D, you have something that will always be nice as a novelty, but will never become dominant.

Factor in that the drain on resources of games really limits them (most 3D PS3 games ran at silly low frame rates) and we need much more powerful hardware before it would be viable.

Just not worth it I guess. Look how many 3DS owners confessed to always having 3D turned off (I think I'm in the minority usually using 3D). The resources are just clearly better spent on other aspects of games. Be it graphics, frame rate or AI.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

I think the telling aspect has been a successful hand held in the 3DS was built in part with that feature central to the design and yet we are seeing even it move away a bit from the feature. If it cannot succeed even within a Trojan horse of sorts then think it is safe to say the market is not crazy about adopting it.

how is it possible that u know that Nintendo is distancing themselves

I think that this feature is kinda left out for launch. Game companies and console companies just want to get the software up and running for launch and it seems that this is only they care about. To deliver games on launch. Having a 3D feature may have a lot of games in longer production thus miss the initial profit

2DS ring a bell?

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Anyway the reason ps4 doesnt have 3d is because sony and microsoft dont want to be too different. They rather fight Nintendo

Yes they brought a 2ds but they still make 3ds. Maybe they stop 3d but its just a guess no1 knows

2DS does not do 3D.  Doesnt mean they arent still making 3D a primary focus but it also shows that they know it isnt the most important thing.  Also adding to that Pokemon which will likely be the most sold game on 3DS soon is only partially 3D.  They also could see that it isnt the most important thing.

I like 3D on mine but sometimes i have it off and other times i have it on.  Doesnt make a huge difference really.

Pokemon X/Y just sold 4.1 million in a day. 3D seems like it's doing ok.

Ask stefl1504 for a sig, even if you don't need one.
