Bad design choices.

Those should be OPTIONS for the gamer.... not mandatory, and no game should be designed around those things. 

We spend so much money on high tech TVs and Consoles, only to get the top and bottom half of the screen cut off, and an old filmic special effect that makes the resolution blurrier. 

Not cool. I want the highest Image Quality possible on next gen games. 

So what do you say when a game uses Cell Shading ala NiNoKuni? Or a faded storybook effect like Valkyria Chronicles? I don't see how this is any different. They are trying to invoke a certain feel/look with these approaches. Its not like they don't have reasoning.

Although the resolution is smaller, it is also using less of the screen. So while the resolution isn't 1080p, the pixel density is probably the same as a 1920 x 1080 screen. The image quality will be of "1080p" calibur and the black bars are there for presentation reasons.

i m all game for Anamorphic resolution and aspect ratio. ditching 16:9 aspect ratio will give the game distinct cinematic edge.. although I assume the resolution will be some around 1920x800.. it will be a killer for people with ultra wide TV or monitors 

I don't want cinematic edge, I want a good game with no gimmicks.

you must not play many games these days. They all have "gimmicks" by your definition.

Not when it comes to gameplay. 

None have that resolution that 1886 will have, and none play the entire game with an Instagram filter on it.
