Forums - General - Anime ARE cartoons!

Yes they are. I never thought people actually considered them anything else.

News Flash! Mangas are comics!

Hahaha, that is something I don't feel like people can argue against very well.  The differences between the two are quite minimal.  They both have panels (read in different directions), both come in volumes, both use onomatopoeia, both are character driven, both are read for the same reasons... I really don't think there's as many differences between Manga and Comics than "Japanese animations" and "Western animations."

I've always felt like what really separates anime and cartoon is how the story is treated.

Example: Spongebob I feel safe to say is a cartoon
Avatar: The Last Airbender I do not.

Hunter x Hunter I feel safe to say is an anime
Gintama I do not

Most cartoons also use different means of expressing their emotions. Anime use more symbolic expressions while cartoons use more literal ones, it seems.

What would you call to name a few: Watership Down, Fire and Ice, Fantastic Planet, A Scanner Darkly in that case?

Anime is more oftenly used for mature stories but certainly doesn't have a monopoly on that.

Honestly I don't think I've watched any of those so I'm not sure what to call them except by name.

Animated feautures I guess, or cartoons is fine too.

I think there is a prevalent attitude in the west that animation in general is for kids. Hence animation aimed at adults never works well over here and you don't get a lot of it. Sure we get some animated sit-coms over here but nothing like for example Lain serial experiments.

A battle video games have to fight often too, although with 'adult' cgi movies not looking much different from video games nowadays you have to wonder why... Most blockbuster CGI movies have a cartoon plot anyway. Why videogame stories always have to be scrutinized against Citizin Kane baffles me.

I wouldn't consider anime any more cartoons than I would consider a Disney animated film like the Lion King to be a cartoon.
It's the same though

Cartoon
a film using animation techniques to photograph a sequence of drawings rather than real people or objects.
synonyms: animated film, animated cartoon, animation

But we have to call them animated feautures in the west because cartoon seems to be a bad word.

A square is a quadrangle.
But a quadrangle isn't a square.

as a kid i always thought this was a japanese anime. props to those guys, i really enjoyed that show

Yes, animes are cartoons and mangas are comics, yet I feel the american productions are way more focussed on comedy, while in japanese ones there often is a focus on action.

uh, that depends on what companies want to import over, they have a lot of gag stuff from Japan too, a lot of people just wouldn't get the culture references unless you know Japan or some other Asian histories really well.

So then it's official, animes are for kids just like Nintendo's games.
