Forums - Sony Discussion - New PS4 Ad Airs During Monday Night Football

I hope that commercial doesnt air in the UK. It would be incredibly annoying seeing that on my living room screen.

I really dont get the point of the commercial to be honest. I know what they were trying to achieve i think but i would have just preferred the games. Like going from live action straight into the game.

Im hyped for the PS60 when that comes out with those visuals :D

It's about brand awarness, not selling consoles.

It's to help build momentum towards the launch.

When have you ever seen a SCEA ad in the UK? They have different advertising agencies. They will be different.

Ryse, Forza, and brown shooters. What a great Xbox ad. :)

Pretty good ad for the most part and completely nails what Sony wants the PS4 to appear as: an iterative gaming console that appeals to it's base. So ... I guess I'm saying it's a bad ad as it's rallying troops that are already on board day one and alienating everyone else.

More and more the PS4 feels like the GC. Hopefully it sells much better.

Not sure this was the right commercial for Monday Night Football.

The majority of gamers know about the PS4 already. You might have a few that aren't aware of it, but in general the information is out there about the PS4.

The intention of this ad is to demonstrate how friends can get online and have fun competing with each other. I'm sure people at Sony said "How can we show two people competing against each other online? Don't show them actually playing a game, because that may not get the message across, put them in the game scenario instead.

The question/problem with this advertisement is two-fold.

Is this a feature with the console itself? They don't mention PSN or PS+. Online competition on the PS4 requires a PS+ subscription. I'm pretty sure if I'm playing KillZone or Drive Club against my friend, I'm going to need PS+ in order to do it. Thus the problem, they're not telling the entire story.

The second issue is who are they advertising to? I'm not sure the MNF crowd is entirely who they want to communicate the message to. Generally speaking that crowd is non-gamer, yet nothing in the advertisement really communicates a motivational point to the non-gamer.

It's almost as if Sony is saying "Hey we're also coming out."

If Sony's intention was to target non-gamers, I think it'll fall flat. Like Microsoft's commercial, the Sony commercial seems to be targeting the 20 something affluent gamer. These are not people who games. They're typically not the people who, when deciding to compete with a friend says, "let's pick up a controller and play a game," rather than "let's pick up a basketball and shoot some hoops."

If Sony's intention was to target gamers, they may have struck a positive core with the people who support Sony consoles, but they may have also wasted money in doing so. Gamers already have made their decision to buy. While some are switching, to one console from the other, they're not doing it in droves and that commercial won't convince anyone who already is planning on getting an Xbox One to switch their purchasing choice.

I don't think Sony hit their intended audience with that commercial.

LOL at all the marketing experts with there detailed knowledge of the MNF audience.

Commercials arent aimed at die hard fans for either side, There just aimed at the people that buy COD, Fifa or Madden each year and the ODD big game outside that. Alot of mums and dads will have seen it, planted a seed for a xmas present that is all.

No parent in this day and age needs to have it explained to them what a playstation or xbox is. It told them the PS4 is out before thanksgiving, in a fun and hopefully memorable way, JOB DONE.

PS4 ‘Perfect Day’ Commercial is the Perfect Ad for the Console

If you were watching Phillip River’s (or perhaps more fittingly, Nick Novak’s) beatdown of the Indianapolis Colts Monday night, then you undoubtedly saw Sony roll-out their latest “Greatness Awaits” commercial. Or perhaps more realistically, you were playing Pokemon and saw the trailer posted on YouTube an hour later. While Sony has had a sketchy track record with marketing in the past decade, there’s little doubt that they’ve improved in the later half of the PS3′s life. From Kevin Butler to “Michael” to the previous “Greatness” ad with the ominous giraffe, Sony has shifted to a quirky sense of humor in their marketing that at the very least grabs your attention. Suffice to say, they’ve come a long way since the days of crying babies.

The latest PS4 spot continues this trend and perfectly conveys the message Sony is trying to deliver about the new console which is: it’s a lot of fun. Live-action, the trailer features two friends battling each other across the PS4 universe, featuring Elder Scrolls Online, Killzone Shadow Fall and Drive Club. No gameplay footage, specs or even the console itself is shown. Yet that’s exactly why it’s so effective.
Most consumers, gamer or not, already know that the PS4 will offer advanced graphics. So will the Xbox One. That’s not the point Sony needs to get across. What they do need to voice is how fun the console will be. By showing two friends battling it out across the console’s universe, it recalls rivalries that many of its target audience has had. Who doesn’t love playing around in a virtual world with their buddy while at the same time trying to dominate them with your elite skills?

Hammering this point home further is the excellent use of “Perfect Day,” which is continuously sung throughout the spot by the actors. The conflicting melancholy/uplifting spirit of the tune has made it perfect to use contrastingly in media, with appearances in “The Signal” and most recently the trailer for horror film, “You’re Next.” It makes the advertisement ring true as playing a buddy is generally a mix between a great bonding session and a never-ending competitive duel. For that reason, it’s likely any other musical selection would have ruined the feeling of the ad.

Professionally shot, clever and quirky, “Perfect Day” is an attention grabbing commercial that sets an exciting tone for the impending PS4 launch. Funny without being goofy, intriguing while not being overly serious, it captures the spirit of the fun of gaming and is a great start to what will hopefully prove to be an equally effective marketing push for Sony’s latest console.
