It can't emulate the games because to do so would be illegal without permission from the companies involved. The most powerful games it can currently emulate are N64 games and it's likely that they limited its emulation capacities at that to save production costs. If Sega let them add the Master System to the VC they'd be able to add emulation via a system update but I suspect that isn't the case for, say, the Dreamcast.

Its just a digital distribution channel for the same players that are releasing Wii titles at the moment... plus the big, established casual game makers (i.e. PopCap).

I bet we see Bejewelled, Chuzzle, Peggle (etc) on the service in the launch period.

Too many players want in, and there is too much money at stake.
