Forums - PC Discussion - AMD unveils 'Mantle' API to optimize GPU performance - Debute with BF4

so, we are back to Glide eh? .................................

Hey that's what I was thinking LOL, maybe this time AMD won't fail but I doubt that now seeing as how they both have awful management.

Can Nvidia support this API. Isn't this API tied to AMD's GCN architecture, hence optimization across all GCN GPU's?

This whole idea seems conflicting to me. It claims to be open source yet it's meant for GCN so my idea about this api is that it doesn't exclusively use every GCN instruction sets but it does expose the hardware features more easily than say direct x.

Not sure if they can support, but I'd imagine they'd come up with their own solution, even if, not quite, as efficient.

Don't know how to multi quote.

@CGI

I doubt Nvidia would waste time creating there own since Mantle is meant to aid developers in the transition of code across different GCN platforms. We would have PC and consoles for AMD, and well only PC for Nvidia.

Although, it's rumored that Nvidia will have Kepler based GPU in Tegra 5 and Maxwell in Tegra 6, so perhaps we could see some CUDA API from Nvidia.

@fatslob

I'd imagine this open source claim is directed at developers and they would have to support multiple API's which would be optional of course.

The term "open source" means the code is freely available to anyone and I doubt AMD would let Nvidia modify mantle so that they could get it running on geforce cards.

Cool stuff. Tagged. I hope OpenGL will integrate it, possibly with transparent conversion from its calls to Mantle's ones whenever possible, to get the best of both worlds.

AMD has tweeted that the anandtech article is an excellent summary of the tech

So I guess that means they are probably right about it essentially being the Xbox One's low-level API. Interesting if that's in fact the case

That is indeed good news!
That could also point to the Playstation 4 having potentially the same low-level API as it's essentially an AMD invention not a Microsoft or Sony one.
