Forums - Sony - VGLeaks: PlayStation 4 Audio Processor (ACP)

"Here we have some material from Sony’s presentations where you can learn more about audio custom hardware in PS4. This dedicated hardware will manage basic tasks, for game or system, relying on the CPU or GPU for advanced tasks.

Another important point is that this audio block is not programmable by developers directly, they could only access it via OS."

Just to explain a bit...

The audio processor is really weak compared to the Xbone one but most features and power of the Xbone's audio processor is due the Kinect One features.

So for games both are comparable... and will do fine without need use CPU or GPU... unless you go for something advanced like Raycasting Audio (both needs to do that on GPGPU).

"Custom Audio Block: Access mediated by OS"

This part is the most interesting part of the leak. Apparently it means that a part of the OS resources (some memory and one of the 2 cores supposedly) will be reserved for the audio in addition of the hardware encoder/decoder.

The OS memory and 2 cores will then manage the scheduling and the Audio Processor will encode and decode the MP3 streams.

We could compare it with the XOne Audio:

- ACP for scheduling and management on XOne would be (to be confirmed) the PS4 "Custom Audio Block: Access mediated by OS"
- ASP for chat and audio would be on PS4 the "encoding and decoding for voice chat"
- AVP is 100% reserved for Kinect on XOne.
- A part of the Shape audio (XMA decoder 512 voices) is similar to the "encoding and decoding 200+" streams on PS4 Audio processor.
- The rest of the Shape audio processor is for additional audio processing.

This mean that the audio quality in chat and in game will be much better?

Good to see that the PS4 has sound.. *adds a plus to the PS4 on his 'which console to buy new gen' list*

When was this presentation? it says 2012

Yeah, XOne has upper hand on this one, it has dedicated DSP for EQ/Dynamics/Mixing (for some reason, I was sure it can do reverbs too, but it seems it can't). This is not big hit on CPU when done native, but with such anemic CPUs I guess every cycle counts.

Xbone audio chips will be used more for the Kinect audio features...

zomg secret arby sauce

I don't really understand this.
