Because otherwise he would have to have a humongous ass sheath on his back all the time. Course they could have just made a strap to hold the sword. So I guess.....they didn't think it mattered?
...
Because it's easier to make a quick-draw animation if there's nothing technically keeping the sword in place. Since when has realism been a concern in that style?
