Forums - Gaming - Nokia Lumia 1020 upstages the Sony Xperia Z1 at Sony’s own launch event

I am getting the 1020 next week, upgrading from the 925. Love Nokia and it is a shame that they take so long to get to Australia.

Good to see that the camera is pretty good on this phone, hopefully the software is not to shabby!! Comparisons are pointless as beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and it is especially refreshing to see the same people bashing the Xbox one posting here.

I'm still more than happy with my 920. It's good for defending myself at night in the city.

There is only one person in here that has bashed sony phones... dont know if he has a 360 or a wii.

On the other hand there are a lot of people saying either Nokia is shit, Windows OS is shit or both.  Even though they likely have fuck all experience of either.

ok, why Xbox lovers started praising Nokia Phones all of a sudden? Its because they are great phones?

I call BS; well, at least on that first photo. That's just a simple photo, yet ure telling me a 20mp camera made it that blurry? Bollocks. A 3mp camera could've taken a better picture than that.

For a company that has a branch specializing in cameras, this is hard to believe. However, if the camera truly is that bad, then Sony deserves to be exposed.

Flash Video playback and live streaming - no problem

May I ask how you achieved that? Wouldn't mind having it on my Lumia. (Which I love by the way, you couldn't pay me to change to another phone OS!)

There are 2 ways I managed to stream flash player content. Well 3 if you count splashtop and PC mirroring but thats not very elegant...

1. Using Plex. It has apps for pretty much every flash player on the web and can stream content from your PC at home to Windows phone. As long as you have a decent upstream (1.5 mbps) you can stream the likes on Gametrailers, The Escapist, CNET...etc

2. FlashVideo - http://www.windowsphone.com/en-ca/store/app/flashvideo/ff811366-4d1b-42be-9254-d9f6f3dd3e8e

The secret to flash players is that virtually none of them actually stream .FLV content. They only use flash for authentication since its way more secure than HTML5. The FlashVideo is able to stream a lot of these flash players that actually play .mp4 files but use flash to authenticate. It also works great for live streams on those questionable streaming sites.  ;)

I must have spent over 10 hours this month streaming US open tennis, soccer and such using this app.

There is also this app which has good reviews, but I haven't used it yet myself - http://www.windowsphone.com/en-ca/store/app/flash-videos/6e5424ae-04ac-4e76-855b-a8cc9ddcc38c

Samsung and apple laughs at Sony and Nokia. IOS and Android laughs at windows phone especially. The windows phone Eco system, developer support, community, widespread appeal aren't even in the same leage as Apple or android.

Being able to take a better picture is a very niche appeal, is easily achievable by any decent technology capable company. I'm sorry window 8 is a step backward from window 7 and windows mobile is just a knee jerk reaction to google android and IOS.

"Being able to take a better picture is a very niche appeal, is easily achievable by any decent technology capable company."lol, you just implied Apple and Android phone manufactures arn't decent tech companies. Lumia 1020 and Xperia Z1 cameras blow droid and apple cameras out of the water.

At 100% crop it should be obvious that a 41 MP Lumia 1020 is crisper than a 20 MP Xperia Z1. What Sony is touting however is low light performance. For instance, look at the following.

The reason professional photographers think megapixels are overhyped is because despite increasing pixel resolution, it makes great sacrifices in low light performance. In this test, the 1020 can't even beat it's predecessor, the 925. It isn't even in the same class as the Xperia Z1.

Having more megapixels in the 1020 means you can have much higher resolution pictures, but at the same time you sacrifice tremendous low light performance. Both smartphones have the best cameras on the market. The choice is simply between either a higher resolution than the already stupendously high 20 megapixels, or phenomenally better low light performance.

For reference, 20MP is equivalent to 5248 x 3936 resolution. If you're computer monitor is 1080p, you wouldn't be able to see the differences even if you made it fullscreen.

Was that research done by a firm paid by Sony? My HTC one takes better night shots than that. Autofocus doesn't do too hot. They need to pick a focus point to get better lighting.

Agreed. My HTC One is much better than that. Biased comparsion.

Love my Lumia 920. Will upgrade soon to the 1020. It has a great combo if first party apps as well as great third party apps that in many ways surpasses the first party apps. Needless to say I've been very impressed with what's available for WP8.
