It's funny how the source for their review said the 1020 was better:

Xbone... the new "N" word   Apparently I troll MS now | Evidence | Evidence

At 100% crop it should be obvious that a 41 MP Lumia 1020 is crisper than a 20 MP Xperia Z1. What Sony is touting however is low light performance. For instance, look at the following.

The reason professional photographers think megapixels are overhyped is because despite increasing pixel resolution, it makes great sacrifices in low light performance. In this test, the 1020 can't even beat it's predecessor, the 925. It isn't even in the same class as the Xperia Z1.

Having more megapixels in the 1020 means you can have much higher resolution pictures, but at the same time you sacrifice tremendous low light performance. Both smartphones have the best cameras on the market. The choice is simply between either a higher resolution than the already stupendously high 20 megapixels, or phenomenally better low light performance.

For reference, 20MP is equivalent to 5248 x 3936 resolution. If you're computer monitor is 1080p, you wouldn't be able to see the differences even if you made it fullscreen.

even my Lumia 920 takes better pics than the Sony one lol

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Xperia looks better, Too much flash with the nokia pictures

Let's just agree the 1020 is better at pictures, but i bet you it's not even close to as bad as that website makes it out to be. They are very close to each other, with nokia winning some aspects and Sony winning at others.

Dude... It is always a good thing for anyone who "likes" a product to see some successfull story about it (small or big). When you ask why, I think it is good, it is DEFINTELY because of preferences... Now, you asking me "why I would see this as a good thing" is just a prelud to a stupid argumentation about Nokia and why I like it or not and blah and blah... Just looking at your posts in all thread related to Sony; clearly shows how this will go.

I don't really care about Nokia or Sony's phones, it's just I didn't get why you think it's good to see an obvious winner.  I think it's fine for you to have a preference and I hope its fine for me to have a preference, and I hope that we don't have to have the same preference.  Life would be boring that way.

I hope I haven't been that bad (@bolded).

No you did not :) Honnestly, was just stating that you have a preference!
And of course it is fine to have preferences. So to anwser your initial question, when you prefer a product; it is always good to see it performing I think (at least from my point of view).

On the other hand, I hope you understand why I was not that excited to move forward with that question as usually (esp. in certain thread with Sony or Microsoft involved) it may becomes just a long and painfull argumentation; I was not really interested by that.

This proves all sony products are all overpriced piece of garbage.

The Nokia is a camera with a phone built around it. If that's what you want, there you go.

The Z1 is a higher class phone with one of the better smart-phone cameras but it's not built around being a camera the way the Nokia is. I don't see any real issues here. Looks like the OP is trying to turn this into a much bigger deal than it is.

The top pictures definitely favor the 1020. But the colors, contrast and saturation for the pic of the girl in the pool look much more natural on the Z1 pic.
