...it's unclear, yes.

Companies have included digital sales when talking about shipments before, so if it's not explicitly stated otherwise, it's better to assume that digital sales are included in the figures.

That would actually be catastrophical. XD

So...

I think its more accurately put as shipments of retail + digital downloads sold. Also, the article says this in it

with the result that as early as the fourth day after the launch sales had already topped 2 million units.
