Let's begin with the beginning of my gaming life. It consisted mostly of playing a few Mario games and Warcraft 2. I loved gaming, it made me happy, etc. This evolved into what I'll call the Gameboy era. I played tons and tons of Pokemon (Yellow & Gold mostly). I loved the games. I would play them for hours and hours while at friend's houses, etc. Obviously I played other games at buddies houses (random sega games, nintendo games, etc.). This era also coincided with my N64 playing times. Specifically, I played tons of Star Fox, tons of Mario Kart 64, and tons of Donkey Kong 64. There were a few others (such as Bomberman), but I absolutely loved the games I was playing (and to be quite frank, I STILL think these are amazing games).

Eventually, we got a PS2 (Not long after it released actually). During these years, I put a lot of time into sports games (with my brother, etc.). There was never really any love in these games, they were just fun time wasters. I also played lots of Warcraft 3 with friends (including Dota). Of all the PS2 games I played, there was really only ONE that I truly loved. Red Dead Revolver. I loved everything about the game. I beat it multiple times, I played it tons with friends, etc. Sure, I had fun with others, but there was really nothing else that struck me as a game to love (that I played). I played a bunch of game boy advance during this time as well, and the same can be said. I honestly have 0 games for game boy advance that I truly loved. There were fun ones, but none I really got into.

Now we'll say I have entered the modern era. More time than anything is put into League of Legends. I don't even love the game, it is simply a fun time waster. While I've had games I truly enjoyed this generation, only one strikes me as loving it (Portal 2). I really enjoyed the Uncharted games, Infamous, etc...but it wasn't like a "Wow, that was truly an amazing game" type feeling to me. Ever since this point, while I have gamed tons, I have struggled to be fully interested in games. I don't know if I'm simply missing out on the amazing games, or what the deal is, but it is really starting to make me wonder if gaming as a whole is simply less of a wonderful thing to me now, and is more of just a time waster.

Is a "lull" like this something everybody in the community thinks is normal, or am I truly starting to lose my love for gaming and am no longer able to appreciate great games the way that I used to?

For how long has this "lull" been going on?

Well, as spurge already pointed out: you ARE here instead of playing a game, so I'll answer the question with yes. All of use are in some sort of gaming mid-life crisis in here (we just don't want to admit it lol), tis why people make threads about being gone for a few days when they find a game they actually love to play.

Well, outside of Portal 2 (bought and beat in like a week after release), there has been minimal enjoyment in console games. I want to think it is just me being unable to find one I truly like...but I honestly don't know anymore.

I hear this more and more each year, I feel the same from time to. I don't know what you would call it. Lack of variety?

I think it is a syndrome known as "getting a life" or its cousin called "wanting to get a life".  There isn't much of a cure for it, outside of it possibly being a cure unto itself. 

Games should serve you, you not serve it.  I am personally feeling similar about professional sports actually, and a bunch of other nonsense they yammer on about.

I tend to go through cycles.

Well, low and behold, I may have already found something that turned the lull around. I decided to bite on the most recent Humble Indie Bundle 9. Started out with Limbo, and it is a pretty fun game! I'll be trying out all of the games, as they do look pretty entertaining :)
