It makes total sense for the Japanese market. If someone said it wouldnt, then i wouldnt value their opinion much.

The Japanese carry their portables around and use them as their main gaming system. Having a home system is not handy for them because they cant make any progress with that that ehy can then take with them. This is perfect for them.

I don't see the logic in this. How can you make progress with the Vita TV when you are traveling? It doesn't have a screen.

Or do you think we will see a new phenomenon where people constantly will go around searching for TV screens available that they can hook up their Vita TVs to?

?

Sorry, but i dont understand what you are on about. The Vita TV means you can hook up your Vita to the TV when you are at home. When you are outside you use your Vita screen obviously. I wonder if you're confused over what this is.

Wait, this new Vita-TV device has its own screen?

No, but if you have a Vita+ Vita TV they can act as one system. I think that will appeal to some, others will just bu PSV TV as a stand alone system.

Vita TV has ports for memory cards and Vita games, so you easily exchange them between the 2 devices. Since all of Japans biggest PSV games are on the system, I could see someone who doesn't intend to buy a PSV, pick this up to play games like God eater 2, Phantasy Star online, Toukiden, Persona 4 etc but then at a later point decide to get a PSV for its portability a feature they really value in Japan.

With PS2 out of production, PSVTV takes its place as entry-level in Sony home consoles range, besides widening PSV user base, but without undermining its sales (as it's an home console, not a portable like PSV), so it makes sense. If properly marketed, it could enjoy some success.

If a product fails to sell that well to the public, it isn't uncommon for companies to try to add a gimmick to it at little to no cost. The question really should be "why didn't they include this in the first place?". Just an excuse to run a new marketing campaign.

Oh i see. I was the one confused. I thought you needed to have a Vita for this thing to work. I guess not. You can still swap the games around though, so it still makes sense to the Japanese. But i suppose this is a cheaper Vita you use with your TV. Shocking. It really is on the same level as the 2DS.

:)

..i think sony is approaching this wrong,. the vita thing is by and large irrelavant.  the really important part is that it will support gaikai.  now i know what gaikai is isn't entirely defined yet but we know backwards compatibility to ps1, ps2, and ps3 are being talked about.  i think ps4 compatibility should be assumed too.  add netflix and the movie rental service (in the announcement) and you basically have the future.

..you know, the future we've been talking about the last couple years about how ps4/xbone is going to be the last generation of consoles as things move to a subscription gaming service that.  well here it is:  PSVita.TV should have just been called PlayStation.TV in my opinion.  a really cheap device that hooks to your tv and allows you to play games via the internet from any hardware making it truely "future proof" as the cloud will take care of the processing.

i'm not going to lie,. this version is a bit shaky.  it should support dual shock 4 not just dual shock 3.  it should output 1080p not just 1080i.  it should have a OS layout specific to PSVita.TV as ps vita is optimised for touch.  it needs gaikai to but out, stable, and well stocked with games.  it needs sony to be far more pro-active about securing entertainment services like hulu and amazon video and whatever else is popular besides netflix.   but hey, there is always the PSVita.TV 2000 and software updates.    ...and getting to market now is smart cause sony is going to need the head start to go up against google and apple and have any chance at success.

We get it debbie downers, it selling out doesn't mean anything, geez. What a depressing bunch around here. Just mention vita, and it seems to be magnetic to haters. don't understand it really is a fabulous handheld.

there you have the reason why it is not supporting 1080p. it is too cheap. sony doesn't want people to buy a simple 100$ device once the ps4 will fade out.

the ps4 will overtake the same role the ps vita tv takes now, but at a higher price and capable of streaming 1080p and 4k, so very future proof IF the whole streaming concept will be accepted/used by the consumers.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:

WiiU: Donkey Kong

XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse
