..i think sony is approaching this wrong,. the vita thing is by and large irrelavant. the really important part is that it will support gaikai. now i know what gaikai is isn't entirely defined yet but we know backwards compatibility to ps1, ps2, and ps3 are being talked about. i think ps4 compatibility should be assumed too. add netflix and the movie rental service (in the announcement) and you basically have the future. ..you know, the future we've been talking about the last couple years about how ps4/xbone is going to be the last generation of consoles as things move to a subscription gaming service that. well here it is: PSVita.TV should have just been called PlayStation.TV in my opinion. a really cheap device that hooks to your tv and allows you to play games via the internet from any hardware making it truely "future proof" as the cloud will take care of the processing.
i'm not going to lie,. this version is a bit shaky. it should support dual shock 4 not just dual shock 3. it should output 1080p not just 1080i. it should have a OS layout specific to PSVita.TV as ps vita is optimised for touch. it needs gaikai to but out, stable, and well stocked with games. it needs sony to be far more pro-active about securing entertainment services like hulu and amazon video and whatever else is popular besides netflix. but hey, there is always the PSVita.TV 2000 and software updates. ...and getting to market now is smart cause sony is going to need the head start to go up against google and apple and have any chance at success. |
there you have the reason why it is not supporting 1080p. it is too cheap. sony doesn't want people to buy a simple 100$ device once the ps4 will fade out.
the ps4 will overtake the same role the ps vita tv takes now, but at a higher price and capable of streaming 1080p and 4k, so very future proof IF the whole streaming concept will be accepted/used by the consumers.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:
WiiU: Donkey Kong
XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse
