This, of course, is a completely opinion based question. What one person considers great may hold no value with some one else. So, I pose the question for everyone. I'm not saying anyone should agree with me, I'm just going to throw out what I think and maybe others will do the same.
When I think of a great console, I think of the nes, snes, ps1, and ps2. Why these systems? It's not because they had the best hardware and software sales for their generations (though they did), it's because they willingly did the most for gamers as a whole. When I see consoles these days, I see an industry that's trying it's best to divid gamers into groups. the 360 and ps3 for hardcore gamers and the wii for casual and non gamers. But what about about last generation and those before that when the target market was just about everyone?
I generalize of course, there are some rated E games for the horsepower systems and M rated games for the wii but it's just painfully obvious where the focus lies.
When I see a system like the ps2, I see games that run the gamet in terms of game design and target audiance. You had mature titles like GTA, MGS, devil may cry, twisted metal black, and RE4. As well as games for just about everyone like jak and daxter, ico, final fantasy X, GT3, the adventures of cookie and cream (sadly overlooked), gradius V, maximo vs the army of zin, katamari damaci, klonoa 2, mr mosquito, and gitaroo man. The variety in terms of look, feel, and scale. It was a system that, to me, seemed like it was saying, "I have someone for anyone." And the games were good to. There were some games that had the red steel effort where you would say "sure, it's different, but it sucks," but there was just so much to chose from. Where are the niche games on the high end systems? Where's that "let's make a great one" approach from anyone except nintendo with the wii?
Anyway, I (and I'm sure anyone one else) could go on and on with this subject. So, I'm not looking for anyone to agree/disagree with me since I understand different strokes and all that. But I'm just interested on what others have to say on the matter.
In my eyes, are any of the systems great at the moment? No, cause I feel like no one has everyone's best interest in mind. Do I feel like any system has the potential to be great (once again, going by my defination of great). I'd love to say the wii but 3rd parties haven't yet taken it seriously and I'm not sure if they ever will. So, I'll go with the PS3 as having a shot at greatness (due to it's history with the ps1 and ps2).
