Forums - General Discussion - Euros Accepted" signs pop up in New York City

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In the latest example that the U.S. dollar just ain't what it used to be, some shops in New York City have begun accepting euros and other foreign currency as payment for merchandise.

"We had decided that money is money and we'll take it and just do the exchange whenever we can with our bank," Robert Chu, owner of East Village Wines, told Reuters television.

The increasingly weak U.S. dollar, once considered the king among currencies, has brought waves of European tourists to New York with money to burn and looking to take advantage of hugely favorable exchange rates.

"We didn't realize we would take so much in and there were that many people traveling or having euros to bring in. But some days, you'd be surprised at how many euros you get," Chu said.

"Now we have to get familiar with other currencies and the (British) pound and the Canadian dollars we take," he said.

While shops in many U.S. towns on the Canadian border have long accepted Canadian currency and some stores on the Texas-Mexico border take pesos, the acceptance of foreign money in Manhattan was unheard of until recently.

Not far from Chu's downtown wine emporium, Billy Leroy of Billy's Antiques & Props said the vast numbers of Europeans shopping in the neighborhood got him thinking, "My God, I should take euros in at the store."

Leroy doesn't even bother to exchange them.

"I'm happy if I take in 200 euros, because what I do is keep them," he said. "So when I go back to Paris, I don't have to go through the nightmare of going to an exchange place."

LOL @ American dollar. Seriously, our national debt problem is out of hand. People assume America will be the number 1 superpower forever, but a bad economy weakened even further by weak currency could easily sink us and have people like China take over.

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. No power has remained on top forever, people don't seem to realize that, they still want a huge defense budget, unwieldy entitlements and low taxes, they don't want to save, and want to spend more than they earn, and what is really galling is its goign t obe those under thirty who get hit the worst by it

The US dollar seems to have the same course as the playstation brand.

You're giving the U.S. dollar too much credit.  The Sony gaming division actually looks like it is on its way to recovery (and it was recovering last quarter).  Sony has more aces up its sleeve than the U.S. economy, which seems to be fresh out.  Hopefully a change in leadership can revitalize things for the U.S. of A.

I don't see how any of that will effect the US as a world power unless we have a USSR style economic collapse.

The most valuable currency in the world is the Kuwait Dinar.

The US dollar is just following down to the level it should be at.  It's been propped up so long artifically both by the US and other foreign countries who use massive amounts of dollars with their own economies. (Japan, etc.)

Even if the US becomes a fairly poor nation the huge defense budget will still keep it on top.

Of course why one wants to be on top i'll never know.  All it does is give you all the blame for everything, as well as be expected to do everything.

US pays most of the UN's bill, the US is buying the UN, US doesn't pay most of the bill, US isn't doing it's part.  Etc.  It's stupid.

I agree with someone here, no power has every been ontop forever, Roman empire lasted a few hundred years. US has lasted what? 30 years only? I don't think US will drop from being Power country anytime soon though, Recession happens. That is all.
