Nintendo have too much money banked and are way too stubborn to stop making consoles :P Heck, the Gamecube sold 22 million vs the PS2's 158 million, and they still made another console, which actually went well.

i don't think sales affected wether they made a new console or not, but profits did, and Nintendo made more money in the GC+GBA era(their least profitable era) than Sony did with the PS2(their most profitable era), so if they make more money than the competition, why not? :P

Can you give me a source for this claim they made more of the GBA + GC, because it doesn't seem likely. While the PS2 did have an initial hardware loss, it did sell (by VGC numbers, which won't be 100% accurate but I'm sure some quick googling will come up with similar numbers) 1.6 billion pieces of software, vs the 590 million of the GBA and CC combined. Seeing at the console maker gets 20% of each sale, that's an awful lot of game profits.

You also can't claim this is voided by the sales of Nintendo published games (publishers get 30%, so that would be a 50% total for Nintendo published games) as the total sales of Nintendo published games across both the GBA and GC was 195 million, vs 185 million from games published by SCE. 10 million at 50% is still a tiny dent compared to the extra 1 billion at 20%.

The fact we even have to add both the GBA and GC number together to compare it to the PS2, shows just how much of a flop the Gamecube was for Nintendo.

Edit: If it is somehow true, could someone explain to me how on earth they would pull that off :P

Neither of them see Nintendo as a competitor...and so far for Wii U rightly so.

I'd prefer if Nintendo left the console business and simply made games though. I enjoy them and it is rather disappointing to have to buy another console just for the few titles I do enjoy. .

I  don't think they are even trying. It's not like they are direct  competitors anymore. Sony is busy enough fighting Microsoft. Also Shu  likes Reggie. :P

I like that so many people seem to have convinced themselves of that.

I know. and it's impossible to convince them otherwise.

Sony can do nothing, only Nintendo can kill Nintendo. If Nintendo releases real games (not SMBU), they sell well. Best thing Sony can do is not try to rip off what makes Nintendo unique, because the end up looking foolish. Anybody remember Playstation Allstars? How about the upcomming Knack? Mod Nation Racers?
Playstation Allstars = Crappy version of Smash Brothers
Knack = looks like a rejected Nintendo concept
Mod National Racers = A boring Mario Kart

?? Every platformer is a rip-off of nintendo?

Dude, your post is biased waste.

Modnation Racers  is outstanding BTW, user created content is massive.

Wii-u, looks like a rejected Sony prototype...See anyone can play this game

Wii-u boring, weak and gimped PS4.

Upset much? You are 100% correct, anybody can play this game (express opinions). TO each their own, btw I noticed you didn't even try to defend Playstation Allstars:). If you think the Wii u is boring, that's fine. I have fun playing it. Weak and gimped ps4? Really? Firstof all it looked like a beefed up wii. Secondly it would just be pathetic if the ps4 only had the power of a wii u. Wii U is what like a year and a half old? We are getting off topic, my point was sony makes great games. The games they seem to fail at are the games nintendo excells at. Thus they shouldn 't try to make nintendo's games.

Upset? No, i called out your BS. I didn't mean the wii-u was boring it was sarcasm to show how poor your entire post was...

Defend Allstars whats to defend? Nintendo doesn't own the fighting genre....there is nothing to defend. Sony can and will make what they want to fill out their portfolio of games...

Well that's certainly very interesting o: I expected it from the PS3 (they spent way too much on R&D and sold it at a bigger loss than reason should allow), but i'm surprised by the PS2 era. Was this also due to the R&D etc?

Edit: Are those numbers for the entirety of Sony, or just the Playstation division?

Sony needs to buy their buildings back first to finally take Nintendo out. Lol

Never going to happen, fortunately. Nintendo's first party is just so huge.
An interesting idea though would be to put sony games on nintendo consoles. Introduce some competition into their market and try to grab as much software sales as possible.

I like that so many people seem to have convinced themselves of that.

Not so much convincing as having read comments from reps from those companies who have suggested that.

Nintendo is kinda like motorcycles in the auto industry. It's not really competing with the cars, but it is cutting into sales. They do their own thing, which I appreciate.

I do not mean "Make them go under", but just out of the systems race. Only a 3rd party developer.

once Sony saw that the PS was able to stomp the N64, they did their damndest to knock Nintendo out with the PS2, but Sony was doing this by themselves. Even then they nearly accomplished this by making the GC a huge disassster.

Now Sony has Microsoft to help take Nintendo down.

But what steps do they need to take? what do they need to go right for them to make this happen?

You're stupid. Nintendo showed to everyone in the 80s and 90s that video games could be sold as profit to the masses.  Without Nintendo, the playstation would not exist.

Yes, the playstation 1 and 2 outsold the n64 and gamecube, mostly because of Sony being a much larger company than Nintendo (more advert $$), and having a much larger base worldwide. But the PS3 was annihilated by the Wii.  Explain that?  Wii was much weaker hardware wise. Maybe it's because Nintendo is the industry innovative leader.

All other companies piggy-back onto nintendo.
Examples:
1)  Multiple game genres Nintendo made popular (2D and 3D Platforming with Mario, third person adventure game- Zelda 64, Kart Racing games- Mario Kart, Party games-Mario Party).  Sony and Microsoft LITERALLY release hundreds of variations of these games.
2)Hardware innovations: Gamecube wireless controllers (then come xbox 360, ps3 controllers), Analog Joystick from the N64 (then comes ps2 and xbox controllers), Wii motion controls (Sony Move, Xbox kinect),

the list goes on and on. I don't want to keep typing.

Fact is: Even though the PS1 might have outsold the N64. Who cares? I don't remember a single game that the PS1 came out with that me or my friends still play.  EVERYONE knows about Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros, diddy kong racing, Goldeneye 007.

Gameplay in general hasn't changed much since Nintendo reinvented the 3d game industry with the N64. Most games are clones of ones we have already played. The PS4 and XB1 are continuing this trend.  Yes the Wii wasn't the best console serious gamers. But guess what, my parents and other parents I knew played with it.  They never touch any other game console

Finally, Nintendo has BILLIONS of dollars stored in reserve for them to stay financially stable for a long time. I didn't even mention the handheld markets in this post, where they have destroyed many companies with the game boy, and are continuing the trend with the 3DS. Not only that, but Microsoft is at Sony's throat because they basically release the same types of systems to the same  type of consumer demographic. Nintendo is more family friendly aimed design.
