Forums - Gaming - So PS4 Is Basically Going To Win This Gen, Right?

I can imagine the PS4 actually stumbling around a bit in 2014, after the launch effect wears off. ESPECIALLY if it doesn't release in Japan quickly enough, giving the Wii U extra momentum. And even if the PS4 does win this gen, there's a difference between NES/PS2 style dominance and Wii style fadness.

PS2-style dominance is possible, but it depends more on what Nintendo and Microsoft can do than anything Sony will do. PS2 did what it did because Microsoft was still ironing out the kinks of being a console manufacturer and Nintendo's creative focus was lost at sea. If Nintendo makes GameCube-esque game-design mistakes with Wii U and Microsoft brings any more major screw-ups to the table, Sony can conquer utterly. If both keep their heads level, then they'll give PS4 a run for its money, and possibly outshine it.

This is exactly right.  It is clear that Sony has learned from its mistakes and is going back to what origionally made Playstation the juggernaut it is:

Make a solid console at at the perfect price point, and give it a nice spoonful of inovation and exclusives.

Past that there is nothing incredibly special the PS1 or 2 did.  They completely dominated due to MS and Nintendo practically trying to make bad products with little to no appeal.

Well the PS1/PS2 had a virtual lock on most important third party exclusives, so that is one that's changed, companies can't afford to make games exclusive anymore, certainly not to Sony (that doesn't have the deep pockets that MS does, ahem Titanfall).

So dominating the way the PS1/PS2 did is probably impossible.

So that is a difference, but on the other points I agree. They've gone back to making a powerful system that's affordable and has lots of third party support, and even unlike the PS2, the PS4 (ala the PS1) is easy to program for and should be able to win this console cycle as a result.

Much as it kills me to say it, yup.. probably.

Sony would REALLY have to botch this one, to the point where it would make the 2007-2009 PS3 era pale in comparison.

Titanfall is going to be a system seller bc, to the great majority of ppl, it looks incredible - fluid, fresh, fun and gamechanging. The only thing that could prevent it from being system seller material would be its online only status, but it looks way too good for that to get in the way. Even I - who isn't a big fan of FPS games OR multiplayer - have to admit it looks fantastic. Would I get it? Still, probably not, but there's no denying its rarely seen level of quality/fun factor.

And the reason Sony has never made an online only system seller is very plainly that none of those games ever looked anything close to as good as Titanfall.

For the record, I only plan to get a ps4. I just speak the truth as I see it. Titanfall exclusivity will hurt Sony unless some announcement or change is made in regard to its release on ps4
I'd be willing to bet money on it.

Not with Illumi-room around the corner. I think games on XBox One are also factor.  Also lets not forget your getting some bang for you buck with MS. Motioin controls,  Cloud service and PS4 online is not free anymore. Sorry I don't think it's just that easy.

I'm gonna go with John Lucas and say Sony and M$ have fallen into Nintendos elaborate trap by offering expensive mechanical monstrosities. They will proceed to be dismantled completely as soon as they release their consoles. The kids will know their place and become niche in the face of father Nintendo, and so will all the traitorous scum that follows them at the expense of father Nintendo.

"You understimate Nintendo at your peril. - great game guru Warren Spector

Don't worry. Once this happens John Lucas's prediction will become reality:

It will happen. BELIEVE

MAG did Ok and was online only.  At the very least it made a decent profit and had a dedicated fanbase that bought up the DLC.  Too bad Zipper didn't try to make it the system seller it could have been with MAG2 and instead murdered the SOCOM series.... **Cries**

-Cloud services are a part of the PS4 too, and so far MS has shown nothing Sony can't/isn't doing or was already done on PS3.

-Even with the motion controls the PS4 is $40 cheaper and it would do anything casuals would want it to do.

-PS+ is still cheaper than Live and offers so many free games and services that it pays for itself.  Also PS+ is not required for all online gaming or Netflix.

-Illumi-Room will be lucky to ever get off the ground without costing an arm and a leg for only a couple games to support it.

It is multiplayer only Call of Duty with mechs.  That is going to appeal to a subset of Call of Duty fans, and also mech cans.  A game that is multiplayer is going to depend critically upon people dragging their friends along.  That is a TOUGH thing to do, really tough.

As far as merely "looking good", I am curious how it stands out better than the latest Killzone, which is a PS3 exclusive.  I am seriously interested in seeing how one would argue that Titanfall looks better.

Also, Titanfall is also a 360 game, which works against it being on the ONE, because anyone with a 360 who is interested, will look to get it for the 360.
