I think he said that because he knows the studio is currently going full board on Knack and trying to get that out in time for the launch of the PS4 so he said that so people wouldn't get their hopes up to see the game anytime soon.  After Knack is done I think they are gonna resume production of The Last Guardian.  After it comes out I am worried that we won't get anymore games like Ico or Shadow of the Colosus just because this game was stuck in development hell and Sony doesn't want to potentially go through that again.

This delay is way past Gran Turismo 5 levels, and is well on it's way to being Duke Nukem Forever. Who even knows anymore.

Well people were saying that about FF Versus 13 and look what happened with that.  I think The Last Guardian will get re-revealed next year and will get released in 2015.

We wont be getting games like ICO, SoTC, not because of development hell but because Fumito Ueda left Sony/Team-ICO and is only under contract  to finish his last project with them. Imagine Nintendo without Miyamoto or Konami/Kojima-Productions without Hideo Kojima..


Is he going to another studio or is retiring?

has anyone actually spoken about seeing the state of its development recently (IE last 2 years)?

Even when FFXIII: Versus was thought to be not ever coming out. Wada did numerous statements saying that he just saw recent builds and the public we'll be excited. all I've heard from this is that it's not dead... but, Beyond Good and Evil too is not dead as well...
