Forums - Sony - Why is dedicating a Gamescom conference to new IPs and indies a bad thing?

Seems to be a lot of negativity around Sony's Gamescom conference for not showing enough AAA titles. This is strange to me because Sony generally doesn't reveal large AAA titles at Gamescom.

Gamescom has never been a place for particularly breath-taking announcements, but I think Sony has done a great job detailing exactly how far they are willing to go to support creative new games and indie development. For me it was extremely reassuring to know that tons of developers were working very closely with the PS4. It was also a breath of fresh air from the more mundane homogeneity of shooters and violence that generally go with AAA games.

What stuns me is that people view this as a negative. As if embracing different genres was somehow making their AAA games worse. As if we don't already have Call of Duty Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Killzone: Shadowfall, Assassin's Creed IV, inFAMOUS Second Son or Watch Dogs. And if that wasn't enough, Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica are confirmed to be working on what I think we can assume are delightfully violent AAA games.

We've had two major events detailing AAA titles with the February PlayStation Meeting and E3. Why is a new IP/indie focused Gamescom so bad?

Around the Network

gamescom isn't a big conference. ms doesn't show up. nintendo doesn't show up. sony shows up but it's never been "another E3".

so why did everyone forget that this year? ..because they wanted to.

We have kinda had this thread like 3 times. Indie games are not real games in a sense they are not what people generally judge the worth of a console on. It is a especially bad with Vita considering popular franchise, or big investments by popular developers built for Vita (Not ports, cross titles, or indies) are like non existence. Where is Final Fantasy, Tekken, Metal Gear, Yakuza.. something. New confident IP from those developers would fine too. If Vita starts getting proper games then announcements of indie's wont be so negative. Combine this with the fact that annoying twitter guy continues to overhype surprises.

I agree with Xxain as in we have had this type of thread way too much recently.

The problem with basically showing only indie games is that Sony hyped up the conference for starters. 2nd off people dont want to spend $400 on a new console for indie games. They want big name AAA titles. This is not to say that those indie games were bad. People just wanted a better reason to purchase the PS4 and Sony did not deliver that to them at Gamescom when many expected they would.
