Also I saw people were going in the other thread, "Oh those Sony fanboys, thinking Minecraft is a killer app, tee hee hee!"
As far as being relevant, Minecraft is pretty close to that. Look at how it has sold on the XBox 360. Look at how much the clones sold in the Indie market on XBOX Live Marketplace. It is pretty close to this. And I was surprised to see at Gamescom that it ended up getting announced. Sony obviously felt it mattered.
As it is now, I am seeing Minecraft, Angry Birds, and add Candy Crush, to three major titles that came out. Plants vs Zombies also is getting up there. Short of Call of Duty, these IPs ARE the top stuff that have come out this era, and all Indie-ish in nature. Explains why you see everyone bending over backwards to kiss the backside of Indie developers and at least pay them lip service.
