Forums - Gaming - Playstation/Xbox market didnt really grow this gen

If u take a look at the PS/Xbox consoles of 6th gen vs 7th gen, the video game market pretty much stayed the same. PS2+Xbox=180 million vs PS3+360=just over 155 million and will probably top out around 180 million (PS3-95m, 360-85m roughly). Even software total is similar, just seems like a select few series became super popular and smaller titles got thrown to the side.

Nintendo on the other hand is kinda in its own market, in the 6th gen it was a pure Nintendo fans console, while in the 7th gen Wii was able to capture the "casual" crowd of families and non gamers while still being a Nintendo fans paradise.

Will the 8th gen PS/Xbox consoles grow, shrink or remain the same this gen? I think it will stay about the same with a 60/40 split in PS4 favor. As for Nintendo and the expanded market, I dont think it will come close to retaining all of it, im thinking like a 50/50 split of Nintendo fans and "casuals" so around 40-50 million.

Not everyone who owned a PS2 was a hardcore gamer. Nor is every Wii owner a casual gamer.

I think it did grow, except a lot of that growth was on PC. Also, as far as software sales go, there really is no telling how much was moved digitally. Including smaller games, I'd bet that gross revenue from digital over the last few years has been staggering.

More people are gaming now than ever before, they're just doing it across multiple devices and with games at multiple price-points, distribution methods, and development levels.

No.
Also most people really forgot the PS2 was only around 100 mil when the PS3 launched. Saying 360 and PS3 will only sell 25 mil combined more after their successors come out is unlikely.

Yep I know, I guess I should have said PS/Xbox fanbase didnt really grow.

People had multiple cosoles, some had two of the same consoles, and some had to buy another console. Those hardware numbers are very misleading. Just like Xbox Live having 46 million users. They don't have 46 millon people playing on Xbox daily.

i can see many casuals in x360, something like 20 mil due kinect.
also there are core gamers in wii too, many of wii owners have also a ps3 or x360.
If the consoles offer good games and also new expeciences(that work), the market will grow.
i can see the nintendo market shrink in home consoles, cos the 'wii U difference' is not the 'wii diference', but games can at least save wii U from doom.

Said, "hardcore" market consists of young adult males.  This market is getting older, having families, and other priorities.  They don't have time for hours on end playing online either.  And the current younger generation is growing up with smart devices and more than willing to do their gaming on there.  Reality is that people haunting this site, and playing console partisans and rooting, are not the bulk of the market for videogames, despite what people here may want to have.

Wasnt it closer to 115 million when PS3 released? But I dont think post gen sales will be a high due to this gen lasting alot longer than the previous.

I edited the thread title and OP to better reflect what I was trying to discuss
