Forums - Politics - Overly obese people, Tobacco Users, or Extreme poor people: Which make the United States look the Worst?

America is known for fat people for some reason even though other countries are fatter (even Mexico is fatter). Poor people aren't the problem either here, it is the easy convenient lifestyle with very cheap food and cars available that do it. Subsidies on stuff like corn also don't help. And i'm sure obesity wouldn't be a problem if money was put into educating people about food and diet and that and to make healthcare affordable.

Huh? What are you talking about?

Smoking? USA is rather considered to be one of the countries with the harshest anti-smoker laws in the world.

Living off the government? USA is rather considered to have a third world social system where poor/unemployed people can hardly expect anything from the government and many end up homeless.

The obesity part is correct though - While USA has actually meanwhile fallen to place 2 in worldwide obesity, most people will probably still first think of americans when they think of overweight people.

* OCED Obesity.

Worldwide Obesity the US is quite farter down the list due to countries like Nauru.

Agreed. I have never heard of Nauru, so U.S.A would still be number one for me unless I dug up some chart.

Mexico is actually fatter than the US believe it or not

That is actually something I have heard about before. I do not know how though. What is the main diet? Something that gives off a lot of calories? Or has soda become really big down there?

There diet is fine (although they tend to have a lot of meat) but they are probably not eating as fresh as before. Processed foods are not very healthy at all.

Yeah, you're right. But the even more obese countries are mainly very small countries that people hardly ever hear about, so that doesn't change the fact that most people first think of americans when thinking of overweight people.

BTW, when asking "Which make the United States look the worst?", are you talking about what the rest of the world thinks?

Because when it comes to what the rest of the world thinks about the US, I believe none of those actually matter much.

I mean, people in the rest of the world may make fun of fat americans when the topic comes up, but in practice people will hardly care. People are always thinking selfish - why should some pakistani child care if Mr. Smith in Ohio is overweight, smoking or poor? There's no apparent way it would affect his own life. He won't care, just as you don't really care if some child in Pakistan lost his father in a drone attack. You'd start to care if that traumatic experience turns that child into an extremist who wants to take revenge against the country that operated the drone by becoming a terrorist.

People care about the things they believe might somehow affect their own lives, so it's rather things like american foreign policy that actually shape what people think about the US (and, in extension, the US population, for they are considered responsible for voting people like George W. into government).

So people in other countries are in practice much more outraged about things like NSA spying, and the general impression that the US is more and more turning from the moral authority it was considered for decades to something like an oppressive hyprocrite regime that gives a fuck about international law, human rights, tortures people, turns country after country into chaos etc., killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians etc.

Overly arrogant ignorant people make USA look the worst. The people that shout USA is the best at everything in the world without even knowing what's going on in their own country, let alone outside of it. Or blind patriotism if you will.

Obese people, tobacco users, poor people don't make the USA look bad. Criticizing other countries for problems you have at home does. Practice what you preach come to mind. Ofcourse that goes for most countries.

What makes the USA look bad in particular, Guantanamo bay comes to mind, the massive cock up dealing with hurricane Katrina, the prison system, unconditional support for Israel, NSA scandals, debt culture, xbox one :p.

All of the top 10 countries in overweight issues is above 60%. It is a fabrication to only place it on United States which is 3rd. Others that make the top 10 includes United Kingdom, Germany, and New Zealand to name a few.

With all that said obesity is the one that gets on my nerves the most because it shows an incredibly weak mind combined with laziness.

It is one thing if you have a disease or condition that makes you have these problems but in most cases it is not the issue. Most of the time the issue is themselves.

I think this comes very close to the essence of my last posting.

As Jimmy Carter pointed out just a few weeks ago (it was published in a newspaper over here, don't know if they reported about it in the US), the whole NSA, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo etc. scandals stopped the US being perceived as a moral authority. And I think that's really about America's deepest problem. Americans may still think that they're "the good guys", but throughout the last 15 or so years, the rest of the world happened to more and more consider them the bad guys because of their foreign policies and are more and more becoming afraid of them. When it comes to global sympathies towards countries, USA is meanwhile perceived just marginally better than China.

Spoiled, obese children takes my vote. Irresponsible parenting is worse than anything you listed.

The poor obese smokers.
