I always play as female if I'm given the option.
Unless the females of that race are really, really... Trust me you don't want to play as a dwarf female

At least they don't have beards =p

If there is an option, I usually play as a female character for a change of pace. I find it a bit more interesting. Also, a lot of times the female character is the finesse/skill option, which fits with my play-style. I almost never go with brute force characters, male or female.

However, I have zero problems with most main characters being male. None at all. Most console gamers are male and it's a lot easier for some people to identify with their own sex. My mother reads a lot of suspense/mystery novels, for example, and she prefers a female protagonist, especially if they're closer to her age. Because of that, I find the "adolescent male fantasies" criticism absurd. Males and females of all ages like characters they can identify with, it's as simple as that. Bashing guys in particular for that is just low-grade, child-level psychology.

There is also the problem of forcing artists and writers to change a character's sex. It's wrong to do that with female characters but it's also wrong to do that with male characters. We shouldn't be saying, "there needs to be more female characters," we should be saying, "developers shouldn't be pressured one way or the other."

Nice post. I really like your conclusion, and you're 100% right on that. Developpers should be directed by people who know what games are.

Is that Orsola (To Aru) on your avatar ?

I don't care. Either is fine.

If its a single player Female.
if its a multiplayer game Male

Reason ,in single player I like to experience something that I do not experience in real life, I also like to act like a female as well , for example in mass effect my shepard is into "Cute guys" instead of being a lesbian. (i am straight by the way)

Reason for multiplayer is that most people who play multiplayer will think I am a girl and then try to hit on me or something like that, and all the horny kids trying to get into my avatar's virtual pants, its not really fun.

It doesn't make you any less straight to play as a female. Where do these prejudices come from anyway ?

There was even an interview of Ken Akamatsu explaining that fantasies about futanari is the ultimate straight(ness ?). It was kinda funny.

if theres no choice there couldnt care less as its for the story but if theres a choice always the male it just feels more natural and 10 times out of 10 its marketed that way so that the male is the way its supposed to be an the female is an alternative. ME3 is prime example

The problem is devs/publishers know that underage kids (usually males) are going to be playing their games and making up a -lot- of sales. Rockstar knows full well a few million of GTAV owners will be young teenage males.

The problem is these young males are immature and not comfortable/confident with their sexuality and will not like playing as a woman, so naturally publishers cater to them and fuck it up for the rest of us.

Shouldn't the art try to make these uncomfortable-with-their-gender-kids think about it, instead of telling them "Alpha males with guns RUUULES !"

When I have a choice, I usually pick male. But not always.

I never, ever, choose female characters in a MMO game. (again, when I have a choice. if I like a female-only class I'll pick it) This is because MMOs are so full of immature kids. If you've played one like WoW, you know what I mean.

OMG U HAVE BOOBZ PLZ BE MY FRIEND.

Thank you.

Nuh uh, that's Yae the Land Goddess from Yozakura Quartet.  Don't be fooled, she only dresses as a nun because she loves the outfit.  She is also obsessed with stuffed bears.
