The Left 4 Dead franchise isn't really story dependent so there really is no reason to play the earlier entries, especially after all these years. Since the franchise is pretty much pure gameplay, each successor is just a superior version of the former.
I rarely see anybody choosing to play L4D1 when they have the option of L4D2.
I mean, you could be one of those people who enjoyed L4D1 more than L4D2 (or who will enjoy L4D2 more than 3), but those people are probably in a very tiny minority. Besides, it wouldn't seem that Valve cares about them anyway, because if they did, they would have ported the games over already.
I would be willing to bet that a cost/benefit analysis of a L4D trilogy as opposed to L4D3 would prove that the extra cost/time of the trilogy would outweight any potential benefits it would bring.
