Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One drops the Xbox Guide

Hitting the Xbox button on Xbox One now sends you straight to the dashboard.

Xbox One is dropping the Xbox 360's 'Guide' interface, Microsoft has confirmed.

Instead, pressing the Xbox button on the Xbox One controller will now take players directly to the dashboard, shrinking down whatever content they're currently running to the background.

Xbox LIVE's Larry Hryb and corporate VP Marc Whitten discussed the changes to the Xbox interface on this week's Major Nelson podcast.

"I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly I became accustomed to the new dashboard and the fact that when I hit the Xbox button whatever I'm doing shrinks down, and all of a sudden there's the whole dashboard," said Hryb.

"The fun thing about 360 – and we've been doing this for a long time – is you had the dashboard and you had the Guide, but you couldn't get to the rest of the dashboard because then you would leave your game behind," added Whitten.

"Now that it's all one thing, and all of the power of Xbox is there right behind that Xbox button, ready for you to say 'Xbox home', 'Xbox resume game', your ability to go instantly in and out of that, it just changes how free you feel moving in between experiences."

Whitten also confirmed that the Xbox One GPU's clock speed had been improved by 6 per cent since E3, increasing from 800MHz to 853MHz, and that final dev kits were now in the hands of the developers.

Xbox One launches this November.

they should have kept that

Why? Now that everything is done instantly, they don't need the guide button anymore.

I'm ready for the instant transitions of next gen. My Vita has totally spoiled me to the point that now my PS3 feels sluggish and controlling. I know that's not really fair, it's a device that's several years older, but the Vita feels like magic in comparison. A button press and a swipe and I can instantly stop my game and check the PS Store or another app then go back to my game right away, with the other stuff still open. Another button press and the console is instantly on standby where I can resume my game at any time. If the next gen consoles are like that then I'm very ready for the upgrade.

Why Microsoft? Remove the 'Guide' interface is like remove the Start button on Windows 8 and we all know how that ended.

???

This is a good thing, the xbox guide button is essentially still there, it's just the entire dashboard.

No it isn't, this is a ridiculous comparison and invalid.

Are some of you not understanding the change???

Not even remotely similar. The Guide was merely the dashboard in a stripped down state. Now the full dashboard is instantly accessible. Seems like a major improvement to me.

Also, there are tons of options to getting your Windows 8 start menu back if you really want it :)

It isn't necessary.

The Guide was necessary because you couldn't have the full OS running while a game was running.

My guess is that the features don't all just disappear.  Pressing on the Guide button when you get a request or an achievement probably does similar things that it does currently.

Yeah like when a cheevo pops up, and you press the button, it'll take you to your achievements page on the main dashboard. It will more or less work exactly like today and people will adapt very easily.
